In a session full of jaw-dropping performances, Markus Thormeyer reset the Canadian Record in the men’s 200 backstroke (SCM) for the second time this ISL season during the opening day of Semi-Final 1.
Thormeyer, who competes for the Tokyo Frog Kings, swam to a time of 1:50.27 in the event, placing sixth overall while knocking .03 off the National Record of 1:50.30 he set back in Match 5.
When the 23-year-old had set that record, he took out the mark previously held by Toronto Titan Cole Pratt by a full second (1:51.30). Prior to Pratt setting the record last December, Thormeyer held the mark from the ISL’s first season in 1:51.57.
Pratt, who will race with the Titans in Semi-Final 2 beginning Sunday, has a best of 1:51.95 so far this ISL season.
Split Comparison
Thormeyer ended up being slightly slower on the last three 50s relative to his Match 5 swim, but it didn’t matter as the gap created on the opening two lengths was enough to keep him under the record.
Thormeyer, Match 5 | Thormeyer, Semi 1 |
26.00 | 25.83 |
27.27 (53.53) | 27.49 (53.32) |
28.01 (1:21.54) | 28.16 (1:21.48) |
28.76 (1:50.30) | 28.79 (1:50.27) |
A 2016 Olympian, Thormeyer has been knocking on the door of another Canadian Record this season in the 100 backstroke, where his swim of 50.61 in Match 9 falls just .01 shy of the super-suited mark set by Jake Tapp back in 2009. Thormeyer will likely have a shot at the record on day two.
Have fun and swim fast, keep chopping off seconds,
