Maggie L Walker Governor’s School won the VHSL Class 3 Boys Swimming & Diving title on February 19th, beating out Lafayette HS by 29 points. MLWGS picked off two of the three relays on the day, and won four individual titles to help secure the team victory.
They kicked off the finals session with a decisive win in the 200 medley relay, where Crash Ackerly (23.70), Bryce Mortimer (26.96), Devin Naoroz (22.65), and James Puzon (23.24) teamed up for a 1:36.55. Mortimer and Naoroz would go on to win individual titles as well.
Bryce Mortimer first took the 200 IM, swimming a 1:54.30 to touch first by 2.40 seconds. He used his breaststroke speed to open up a big lead on the field, which he was able to hold through the final 50. Mortimer then went on to win the 100 breast in a tight race with York HS’ Daniel Liang, getting his hands on the wall first in 58.20, while Liang touched in 58.51. Mortimer got out to a half-second lead over Liang on the first 50, which Liang was able to cut into on the final 50, but Mortimer would still lead into the finish.
Devin Naoroz would go on from the medley relay to win the 100 fly, getting his hands on the wall first in the tightest finish of the day. Naoroz was out faster than William Byrd HS’ Colin Murtaugh on the first 50, splitting 23.45 to Murtaugh’s 23.75. Murtaugh severely cut into that lead on the 2nd 50, splitting 26.70 to Naoroz’s 26.96. Ultimately, Naoroz got into the wall in 50.41, with Murtaugh right behind in 50.45. Naoroz then won the 100 back as well, also in a close race, this time with teammate Crash Ackerly. Naoroz finished in 50.30, Ackerly 50.45. The pair were right next to each other the entire way through the race.
Ackerly and Naoroz were also on MLWGS’ 400 free relay, which won comfortably. Ackerly led the team off in 47.77, and was followed by Abhishek Satpathy (50.62), Ryan McAtee (50.17), and Noaroz (46.95) for a 3:15.51.
There was a VHSL Class 3 Record broken on the day, coming at the hands of Brentsville District HS senior Benjamin Huffman. Winning the 200 free in a 1:38.56, Huffman cracked the previous Class 3 record by nearly a full second. The Boston College recruit also posted a personal best with the performance. Huffman would go on to win the 500 free in 4:27.45, also a personal best.
Lafayette HS won the 200 free relay, where Nathan Cummings (22.62), Braden Lee (22.91), Connor Rice (21.89), and Victor Parks (21.49) teamed up for a 1:28.91.
Cave Spring’s Connor Woods won a pair of events, taking the 50 free in 21.24, before going on to win the 100 free in 46.68.
Diving was won by Brookville HS’ Ethan Mayfield, who racked up 359.10 points to win the title.
