The Bulldog women’s swim team traveled in-state to compete with Valparaiso and Lewis on Friday. They defeated the host’s Valparaiso, 203 to 58, but came up just short against Lewis, 129 to 133. Butler notched five first-place finishes as well as taking runner-up nine times.
Cotter Welch was recognized by head coach Maurice Stewart as the “Swimmer of the Meet” and teammates Gianna Leffler, Elizabeth Naylor, and Kate Schilling were all listed as honorable mention.
Welch had strong performances in the 1000 Free and 500 Free. She touched in the wall in third in the 1000 Free with her season best 11:08.99 swim. Welch followed that up by winning the 500 Free with a 5:22.48 time.
Bulldog swimmers impressed alongside Welch in the 1000 and 500 Free events. Elizabeth Naylor came close to her season best as she swam a 10:57.25 in the 1000 Free while Butler swept all top three spots in the 500. Grace Crane and Naylor swam 5:26 and 5:26.62 respectively taking second and third behind Welch.
Butler’s other first place finished included the 100 Fly, 100 Back, and 100 IM. Kate Schilling’s 1:00.16 won the 100 Fly while Gianna Leffler finished atop the 100 Back racing a 1:02.11 time. Sophie Resner ended behind Leffler in third with a 1:03.02.
The 100 IM was another event in which the Bulldogs swept the top three positions. Schilling took the win while Allie Carmichael and Sadie Brown rounded out second and third. Schilling’s first place 1:01.27 broke the school record previously held by Carmichael.
Emily Landwehr led the Bulldogs in the 50 and 100 Breaststroke events. Landwehr touched the wall for a 31.69 time to take second in the 50. She matched her second-place finish in the 100 swimming a 1:09.49.
The 50 Back, 50 Free, and 50 Fly all saw Butler add to their second-place finishes. Leffler swam a 28.74 time earning her second in the 50 Back. Olivia Stotts swam a 24.99 in the 50 Free, beating out her teammate Abigail Roberts who was just behind her at 25.68. Kate Schilling got touched out for first with her 27.26 time in the 50 Fly.
The 100 Free saw Megan VanValkenburgh swim a 55.29—good enough for a third-place result. Stotts took fourth in the same event clocking in at 55.48.
Butler’s relay teams featured in the 400 Med Relay and the 400 Free Relay. In the Med Relay, Resner, Carmichael, Brown, and Crane swam a 4:08.48 time. The Free team of Crane, VanValkenburgh, Landwehr, and Stotts placed runner-up with a 4:08.48. Butler had third-place finishes in both relay events as well.
