GAMBIER, Ohio — The Kenyon College women’s swimming and diving team claimed a pair of decisive victories in a double-dual against Oberlin College and Cleveland State University. The Owls won every individual swimming event and took first place in 13 of the day’s 16 total competitions, as Kenyon started 2024 on a high note at home.
The Owls narrowly missed out on a clean sweep of the swimming events after Kenyon’s A team was disqualified for an early take-off in the 200-yard medley relay. After settling for second and third in the dual’s first event, Kenyon took the top spot in each of the remaining 13 races. When the final scores were tallied, Kenyon earned a 239-61 victory against Cleveland State, an NCAA Division I institution, and a 287-12 win over Oberlin, a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe.
Gabrielle Wei led the way for the Owls, tallying three first-place finishes as an individual. The junior took top billing in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and the 200-yard individual medley. In the 100 breaststroke, Wei clocked in at 1:04.17, 0.07 seconds ahead of fellow junior Jennah Fadely. The classmates went back-to-back in the 200 breaststroke, where Wei won with a time of 2:19.51 and Fadely finished at 2:20.40. All four times came in under the NCAA ‘B’ Cut threshold. Wei ended her triumphant day with a winning time of 2:08.57 in the 200 IM, an event where the Owls claimed the top six spots.
Kenyon first-year Bengisu Caymaz also claimed multiple individual victories. The distance swimmer touched first in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 10:09.15 early in the meet before taking the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:58.71 a little later. Caymaz had already secured a superior ‘B’ Cut time in the 500 freestyle, but her time today still came under the 5:00.37 cutoff.
Other Owls to win individual races included Molly Haag (200-yard freestyle), Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault (100-yard backstroke), Sophie Schmitz (200-yard butterfly), Gwen Eisenbeis (50-yard freestyle), Sydney Geboy (100-yard freestyle), Caleigh Wukitch (200-yard backstroke), and Celia Ford (100-yard butterfly). Overall, there were only two events, the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard backstroke, where the Owls did not manage to take at least the top two times.
Kenyon put the cherry on top of the double-dual with a win in the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Owls A and B teams went 1-2, and the quartet of Eisenbeis, Torrecillas-Jouault, Kate Bogan, and Geboy paced the field with a time of 1:36.04.
Cleveland State fended off the Owls in a pair of diving events during the contest as the Vikings’ Brooke Eichel came out on top from both one and three meters up. Kenyon first-year Olive O’Dorisio placed second in the one-meter dive (211.85) and fourth in the three-meter event (187.45), while sophomore Bryn Tiernan finished third at each height with scores of 207.65 and 204.00, respectively.
The victories boosted Kenyon’s record to 3-2 overall this season, and the Owls closed their NCAC slate with a 2-1 mark in conference contests. Kenyon still has two outings on its schedule before the NCAC Championship, which runs from February 14-17. Next, the Owls take on DI Miami University (OH) in Oxford, Ohio, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 20.
GAMBIER, Ohio — Prior to kicking off the upcoming spring semester, the Kenyon College men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2024 calendar year by posting two wins in Friday’s home double-dual meet with Oberlin College and Cleveland State University. The Owls handed Oberlin a 216-67 defeat and dealt Cleveland State a 154-133 loss.
Overall, the Kenyon men won 10 of the 16 events contested at Steen Aquatics Center. Eight of those 10 were individual wins and two were relay wins. Cleveland State swept the two diving competitions and claimed the other four individual event wins.
Following a meet-opening victory in the 200-medley relay, the Owls registered their first individual-event win in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Junior James Tracey claimed first in that race, wrapping things up in 9:49.12 and narrowly holding off teammate Peter Landis, a senior who took the runner-up spot in 9:50.76.
Tracey’s result, combined with sophomore Ethan Manske’s win in the 500-yard freestyle, gave Kenyon a sweep of the distance events. Manske topped the 500 field with a time of 4:42.73.
First-year Noel Tumbasz nearly pulled off his own sweep in the breaststroke events. He won the 200-yard race in 2:04.33 after taking second place in the 100-yard race with a time of 57.49.
In sprints, junior Aleksa Dobric and sophomore Djordje Dragojlovic chalked up two more wins for the Owls. Dobric was the fastest in the 50-yard freestyle, stopping the clock at 20.72 and Dragojlovic claimed first in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 44.29.
Rounding out the Kenyon individual event wins was a trio of seniors. Yurii Kosian won the 100-yard backstroke in 49.07, Marko Krtinic took the 100-yard butterfly in 49.94 and Noah Hargrove was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly, stopping the clock at 1:51.94.
Back at the beginning of the meet, the Owls watched Kosian, Dobric, Krtinic and Daniel Brooks finish the 200-yard medley relay with a winning time of 1:30.18. At the end of the meet, it was Brooks, Krtinic and Dobric teaming up with Dragojlovic to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:22.29.
Looking ahead, the Owls have two more dual meets before they prepare for the conference championship. They’ll first head to Miami (OH) University on Saturday, January 20 and then return home to host Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 3.

This wraps up our winter “staycation” and we can now shift our focus to fine-tuning for our senior day and Horizon League Championships.”
The Vikings started the day off by winning the 200-yard medley relay as Audrey Butcher, Ella Ciez, Haley Palmer, and Grace Chelf finished in 1:47.88.
Brooke Eichel won 1m diving with an NCAA Zone Cut of 268.50 points. She went on to win 3m diving with 240.05 points.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, Olivia Leonard finished third with a time of 10:57.79.
Chelf came in third during the 100-yard backstroke after touching in 59.31.
The 200-yard backstroke saw Chelf (2:06.63) finish as the runner-up and Alaina Brown (2:10.44) come in third.

The Green and White concluded the day with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Chelf, Palmer, Madison Taker, and Ana Sofia Sousa clocked a 1:38.15.
The Vikings will have their final tune-up before the Horizon League Championships on Friday, Jan. 26 against Oakland for senior day at 4 p.m.
NCAA Zone Cut
Brooke Eichel – 1M Diving – 268.50 Points

Cleveland State started the day with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as Jackson Nester, Blake Fry, Thomas Lundin, and Daniel Lyngaas finished in 1:35.75.
Nester won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.53 and Connor Green placed third with a 1:42.52.
Tyler Schultze won the 100-yard breaststroke after touching in 57.43.
James Wolf won 1m diving with an NCAA Zone-Cut of 314.60. He went on to win 3m diving with a score of 283.65.
Paddy Johnston placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (49.27) and 100-yard freestyle (45.06).
In the 200-yard butterfly, Lundin (1:53.96) came in second and Reno James (1:58.00) in third.
Josh Merchbaker claimed the second spot in the 50-yard freestyle, sprinting to a time of 21.38.
Nester won his second event of the day in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.15. Jake Taulbee was the runner-up with a time of 1:57.11.
The 200-yard breaststroke saw Schultze (2:04.73) come in second and Aidan Florio (2:08.08) in third.
Green recorded a runner-up finish in the 500-yard freestyle after stopping the clock in 4:44.62.
Lundin grabbed a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly after finishing in 50.57.
Nester triumphed for a third time, winning the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:51.23. Schultze came in third with a 1:57.30.
Cleveland State ended the day with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle as Johnston, Merchbaker, Kenny Thomas, and Green finished in 1:23.09
The Vikings will have their final tune-up before the Horizon League Championships on Friday, Jan. 26 against Oakland for senior day at 4 p.m.

Gambier, Ohio – After a six-week layoff from competition, the Oberlin College swimming and diving teams returned to action on Friday afternoon, taking on Owls of Kenyon College and Division I foe Cleveland State.
The Owls men’s side came into the meet ranked No. 1 in the country in NCAA Division III and No. 2 on the women’s end. The men’s team fell to the Vikings 220-76 and to the Owls 216-67. The women’s team dropped a 219-75 decision to CSU and lost 287-12 to Kenyon.
The meet started with the Yeomen grouping of Myles Felt, Isaac Viviano, Erik Fendorf, and Daniel Bocsi taking second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.34. Viviano later turned in a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:13.09 while Felt added a third-place In the 100-yard butterfly in 51.63.
In the first individual event of the meet, first-year Chahine Said continued to impress, placing third in the 1,000-yard free behind two Owls with a time of 9:57.35. Said also registered a fourth-place finish in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:49.24 while teammate Miguel Siwady took sixth in the 16-person field with a mark of 4:50.26. Siwady also placed eighth in the 200-yard IM in 2:01.60.
Felt returned to take sixth place in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.26, and Leo Powers would later follow with a fifth-place showing in the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 2:03.70. In the 50-yard free, Fendorf placed sixth out of 13 swimmers in the event with a time of 21.84.
In the 200-yard backstroke, rookie James Moll finished behind two Vikings to take third place in 1:57.83, narrowly missing second place by just .72-hundredths of a second.
On the boards, Sebastian Lagasse was third in the 1-meter with 125.15 points and he also placed third off the 3-meter board with 126.35 points.
On the women’s end, Charlotte Hantus was seventh in the 1,000-yard free (12:00.01) while teammate Nyrobi Whitfield also took seventh place in the 50-yard free in 25.84. Whitfield would later place ninth in the 100-yard free in 58.82.
Audrey Weber clocked in at 2:48.58 to place eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke and Rosalie Baron added another eighth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.92.)
In the closing 200-yard free relay, the foursome of Ava Peyton, Elinor Frost Hannah Hale, and Whitfield placed fifth in 1:43.31.
Off the 1-meter board, Faye Huffman totaled 143.55 points to place seventh, while Winifred Wood was one spot back with 124.60. Wood was sixth in the 3-meter event with 122.90 points.
The swimming and diving teams go right back tomorrow afternoon with a dual meet at Ohio Wesleyan University starting at noon.
