Hosszu Posts 6th Fastest 200 IM Ever, Breaks Meet Record

On the front half of a tough double tonight at day 4 finals of the European Championships Hungarian Katinka Hosszu won her 3rd gold medal of the meet in the women’s 200 IM, putting up the 6th fastest performance in history in 2:07.30. The swim also breaks her previous meet record of 2:08.11 from the 2014 Championships in Berlin, and is her fourth consecutive victory in this event at the European Championships, dating all the way back to the 2010 European Championships in Budapest.

Hosszu now owns 4 of the top 7 performances in history, with her world record mark of 2:06.12 from the World Championships last year in Kazan sitting at the top. Here’s a comparative look at the splits from Hosszu’s previous Championship record, her record from today, and her world record:

Hosszu was about half a second off her world record splits in the butterfly and breaststroke, but her backstroke and freestyle splits were almost right on. Look for her to challenge her world record at the Olympics in August.

Finishing behind Hosszu for silver Siobhan-Marie O’Connor of Great Britain in 2:09.03, and her teammate Hannah Miley was 3rd in 2:11.84. Hosszu improves her world leading time, while O’Connor improves from 3rd in the world to 2nd.

The gold medal adds to Hosszu’s tally after winning the 400 IM and 200 back earlier in the meet.

Hosszu completed her tough double less than an hour later, taking silver in the 100 back in a time of 58.94. Denmark’s Mie Nielsen won gold in 58.73, a new Championship record.

Hosszu is now done for the meet after scratching the 100 fly prelims this morning.
