Jonathan Kollen, a three-time Michigan High School Athletic Association state finalist, has committed to swim collegiately for Wisconsin-Milwaukee beginning this fall.
The Zeeland West High School alum was the MHSAA Boys Division 1 state championships runnerup in the 200 free (1:40.55) and finished fifth in the 100 free (46.27) in March 2019. He also was part of Zeeland’s seventh place 400 free relay and 12th place 200 free relay teams.
In 2018, Kollen was 10th in the 200 free (1:42.61) and 15th in the 100 free (47.29) at the MHSAA state meet. He was a member of Zeeland’s fifth place 400 free relay and 17th place 200 free relay
In 2017, Kollen was a state finalist in the 200 free, finishing eighth (1:43.68), while also placing 12th in the 100 free (47.62). He was part of the third place 400 free relay and 18th place 200 free relay teams.
Kollen posted a 2019 Futures time in the 200 free (1:58.00) at the Michigan 13-14 and Open Long Course State meet in July 2018.
“When I was looking for schools, I really focused on academics and the team,” Kollen told the Holland Sentinel. “Milwaukee has a great program for my major, and the team was amazing. I wanted a school that was going to push me in and out of the pool. The Horizon League offers a lot of competition and I am looking forward to racing in it.”

Milwaukee’s sophomore Jasper Appleton made the finals, finishing eighth in the 50 free, at the 2019 Horizon League Championships, while the Panthers’ senior Ahmed Ghallab was eighth in the 100 free. Kollen’s top times in the 100 and 200 free would not have ranked among the top six among Milwaukee swimmers in 2018-19.
