GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

% of Time

50% Instruct, teach and assist in the development of athletes during practices and contests. Follow and conform to NCAA, MAAC, athletics department and university rules and regulations.

45% Recruit athletes for the following year and make athletics scholarship recommendations.

5% Maintain budget and other administrative duties as assigned. Consistently monitor all employees who report to this position and write a minimum of one performance review annually for each employee.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS

The functions of the position usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of time standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, cutting, labeling, and taping involve extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

1) Bachelor’s degree in related field is required with a high-level amateur or professional competing and/or coaching experience

At least one year of experience coaching swimming at the high school, college or higher competitive level or at least three years experience competing at the college level or higher.

The Aquatics Director manages the operational aspects of the facility, including budget oversight, safety protocols, and the recruitment and supervision of lifeguards. Responsibilities also entail optimizing the facility’s master schedule and executing pool maintenance, which includes monitoring chemical levels and identifying maintenance needs. Maintaining accurate records for water chemistry and facility upkeep is crucial for ensuring regulatory compliance and safety.

 

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in physical education, recreation, health, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with prior competitive swim and/or diving coaching experience, particularly at the collegiate level. Applicants must possess current CPR/First Aid certification, be a certified Lifeguard and/or a certified Lifeguard Instructor, and become a Certified Pool Operator within the first three months of employment. Although a current swim instructor certificate is preferred, it is not mandatory. Successful experience in recruiting is essential, and the selected candidate must complete the NAIA Champions of Character coaches course within the first two weeks of employment. Additionally, the ability to work non-traditional hours, including weekends and evenings, is required, along with a willingness to travel up to 30% of the time.

The Piedmont Swim Team is looking for an energetic team player who loves to coach youth athletes and is motivated to help advance our swimmers and program to the next level. This position reports to the Head Coach of Piedmont Swim Team who is responsible for the daily operations of the Club.

Employment Status: 

Part-time: Work hours vary between the hours of 5:30-7:30 a.m. (1-2 days per week) and 3:30-7:15 p.m. on weekdays, plus 8:15 a.m. -12:15 p.m. on Saturday and 7:45-11:15 a.m. on Sunday, and generally monthly weekend swim meets on both Saturday and Sunday.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist the Head Coach and the entire PST coaching staff in implementing a comprehensive competitive program for our athletes
  • Conduct about 20-30 hours per week of on-deck coaching
  • Incorporate goal setting into practice sessions at both the group and individual swimmer levels
  • Support swimmers, parents and coaches at swim meets as needed
  • Communicate effectively with other coaches, parents, and swimmers ages 6-18
  • Perform seasonal and yearly evaluations of swimmers
  • Help maintain up-to-date performance reports on our athletes
  • Attend all scheduled swim meets, meetings, and team functions as needed

  • Knowledge of and expertise in: 
    • Current technical, training and motivational philosophies in swimming
    • First Aid, CPR, AED, and other lifesaving techniques
    • Competitive swimming and coaching at all age groups below senior levels
    • Teaching stroke mechanics
  • Skills:
    • Demonstrates positive, consistent, and effective motivational strategies when working with swimmers, parents, and other coaching staff in relation to all aspects of the program
    • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and experience in on-site protocols for practices and meets, operational procedures, and safety policies
    • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of and ability to administer or use first aid, CPR, AED, and other lifesaving techniques
  • Ability to:
    • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
    • Demonstrate mature judgment, reliability, availability, and ethical behavior
    • Work effectively with staff and swimmers at all levels, displaying a positive attitude, demonstrating presence and self-confidence, and exhibiting motivation and drive

    • Maintain clear professional boundaries with swimmers and families and adhere to the American Swimming Coaches Association Code of Ethics, the USA Swimming Code of Conduct, and all SafeSport, USA Swimming, and team policies regarding athlete safety and protection

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: at minimum, high school or GED degree, college degree preferred
  • Experience: 4+ years competitive swim experience. Coaching experience preferred.
  • Certificates:
    • Ability to meet all USA Swimming certification and coaching requirements before the start of employment
    • Must possess the following certifications from the Red Cross or other equivalent agency: Safety Training for Swim Coaches or Lifeguard Certification, CPR, AED, and first aid
  • Must pass the following: 
    • USA Swimming background check
    • LiveScan Fingerprinting background check
    • Employment reference checks
    • Education verification
    • State motor vehicle report
    • Social media and internet checks
  • Must have legal rights to work in the United States.

Physical Requirements:

  • Be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in the work environment
  • Have the ability to move and adjust lane lines
  • Have the ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Be able to see swimmers’ stroke mechanics in the pool, and read a computer screen and printed material
  • Be able to hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone
  • Be able to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly
  • Possess the physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height
  • Have the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead

Compensation: Piedmont Swim Team offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications. Our range for hourly coaches is $25 to $35 per hour, negotiable based on experience level. We offer access to comprehensive benefits programs. There are also additional income opportunities available through PST’s swim lesson program.

t. Lawrence University is currently seeking applicants for a Graduate Assistant Coach for Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving to begin Fall 2025. This 9-month position (August to May) is targeted toward graduate students seeking a master’s degree. Remuneration includes a very competitive coaching stipend, student health insurance, and eligibility for tuition remission (6 graduate classes per year in the University’s graduate program). St Lawrence offers a Master of Arts in Leadership.

Responsibilities include providing instruction; implementing a seasonal plan with the Head Coach; strength and conditioning; scouting and recruiting; coaching the St. Lawrence University swimmers during meets, and administrative tasks as assigned by the Head Coach.

The Graduate Assistant for Swimming and Diving will provide support to the Head Coach in all aspects of the program. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to gain experience in collegiate coaching while pursuing a graduate degree. The Graduate Assistant will assist with on-deck coaching, recruiting, administrative tasks, and the overall development of student-athletes.

Responsibilities:

  • Coaching Support: Assist the Head Coach with the execution of daily training sessions, including both in-water and dryland training.
  • Athlete Development: Provide individual and small group instruction to student-athletes, focusing on technique refinement and skill development in all swimming strokes and disciplines.
  • Meet Management: Assist with the setup and breakdown of home meets and to travel with the team to away competitions.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Swimming & Diving Coach.
