Texas Longhorn Aquatics has been hosting the Texas Open this weekend at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, and Longhorn graduate Jimmy Feigen has been the headliner so far. The sprinter cracked 50 seconds in the 100 free on opening night, going 49.85 in what looks like a solid tuneup swim for the potential member of the American sprint relays at Pan Pacs.
Feigen was a notable name absent from the Santa Clara Grand Prix last weekend, but showed he’s still in great shape here. So far Nathan Adrian (48.08) and Michael Phelps (48.80) are the two highest-ranked Americans in our World Rankings, and the U.S. will place a lot of responsibility on guys like Feigen to put together a consistent relay for international competition.
Feigen was also entered in the 50 free but scratched the event on Saturday. The meet continues Sunday afternoon.
A few other notable winners over the first two days of competition:
- Texas and Bluefish pro Laura Sogar won the 200 breast, though she was about 3 seconds off of her time from the Santa Clara Grand Prix. Sogar went 2:32.39 to beat current Texas collegiate swimmer Gretchen Jaques (2:35.56).
- Sarah Denninghoff, returning from a hip injury that cost her a full college season, picked up the 100 backstroke win, going 1:03.18. Denninghoff confirmed a few weeks ago that she’ll be returning to Texas for her senior season this coming fall. She also won the 200 back at this meet, though she was the only swimmer entered in the 19&over category. She went 2:15.51.
- Kaitlin Pawlowicz, a rising senior on the team, won a pair of events – the 200 fly (2:14.32) and 400 free (4:18.23). She’s currently representing her hometown club, Nation’s Capital.
So he should be on the 4by100m relay team for Pan Pacs if he keeps this up
Decent swim by Feigen, but the real noteworthy swim of the evening has to be wes thomas’s 200 IM. 2:16? wow. Very impressive.
Feigen can probably go faster this year than last year ! I wish him that during this summer . Usa needs for it’s relays a fit Feigen for Pan Pacs .
Up until last weekend, I would’ve considered Feigen a near-lock for 2nd place in the 100 free at Nationals, but Phelps could definitely make it interesting. Still think the 4×100 free team at Pan Pacs will be Phelps, Feigen, Adrian, and one of about six other swimmers who have a good shot.
At the start of the year I would have picked Caeleb Dressel for the relay but he looks very far from his best level right now.
Getcher Horns up! Good swim by Feigen. Based on what I’ve read of the Texas program, Feigen is probably near the end of some brutally hard training right now, and probably will begin resting soon. Hopefully a :47-mid from him this summer, at least!
