World Junior Championship gold medallist Javier Acevedo of Canada has changed his training environment to the Markham Aquatic Club.

The former Ajax Swimming athlete switched clubs following the closure of Ajax, and is now settled in to a new training environment. Other Ajax standouts including Ryan Telford, Danika Huizinga, and Kayla Sanchez all switched over to MAC as well.

During his first meet with MAC, Acevedo put on quite a showing. Focusing mostly on sprint freestyle and backstroke, Acevedo went head-to-head with American age group star Michael Andrew in several events.

Acevedo’s first win came in the 200m freestyle where he threw down a 1:46.12 to win against some serious international competitors. Following that win, Acevedo placed second to Andrew in both the 100m butterfly and 50m backstroke with times of 53.68 and 24.09 respectively.

Acevedo really showed what he was made of on the second night of competition however, taking down Andrew in the 100m backstroke and doing so in a new Canadian age group record time of 51.63.

Throw in a 22.64 50m freestyle, a 24.08 50m butterfly, a 2:03.94 200m IM, and a 49.26 100m freestyle, and Acevedo had a very strong competition.

Acevedo will be competing this weekend in Toronto at the Ontario Provincial Championships.
