The mixed 4×50 medley relay final saw two teams crack the world record, but only one simultaneously broke the European record alongside it: Italy. Their team of Lorenzo Mora, Nicolo Martinenghi, Silvia di Pietro, and Costanza Cocconcelli won silver with a time of by setting a European record with a time of 1:36.01, breaking the European record and the previous world record. Both marks were set previously at 1:36.18 by the Netherlands.
Mora lead off with a blistering 22.59, a time that breaks Michele Lamberti‘s Italian national record in the individual 50 back by .03. But, his split will not count for the national record because it was part of the mixed relay. He will have another crack at the record in the individual 100 back final later where he is the 3rd seed.
Mora handed it off to Martinenghi (24.83) and then di Pietro who beat her lifetime-best 50 fly time by half a second with a split of 24.52. Cocconcelli came home in 24.07.
While the Italians beat the world record mark as well as the European record, the Americans set it faster, at 1:35.15, to win gold.

Both Italy and the U.S. chose to order themselves the typical male-male-female-female lineup. The previous European and world record-holding relay, however, was structured female-male-female-male.
