Hwang Sun-Woo Withdraws from Men’s 100 Free Semis, MacNeil Out Too (Day 4 Finals Scratches)

2024 PARIS SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

DAY 4 Finals HEAT SHEET

Korea’s Hwang Sun-woo has put his nation and their relay prospects ahead of his own personal chances as he has scratched out of this evening’s men’s 100 freestyle semifinal. Jumping into Hwang’s lane tonight will be Australia’s William Yang, who was 17th this morning in a time of 48.46.

The Korean was the 15th seed in the event, and this morning placed 16th in a time of 48.41. However, his withdrawal makes way for him to be rested for his nation’s 4×200 Free Relay, which is scheduled to take place an hour and 45 minutes after the 100 free.

Hwang finished 9th in the semifinals of the 200 free in a time of 1:45.92, which must have been a bit of a disappointment as he entered as the 4th seed with an entry time of 1:44.40, from his gold medal performance at the 2022 Asian Games. A few months later, he won his first World Championships medal at the Dhoha Worlds.

At the same meet, the Korean men took silver in the 4×200 free relay, with Hwang anchoring in a blazing 1:43.76. This morning, the Korean men placed 7th in a time of 7:07.96 with Kim Yeong-hyeon‘s 1:48.26, the likely leg to be replaced by Hwang.

Also, scratching out of the 100 free semifinal, albeit the women’s event was Canada’s Maggie MacNeil. MacNeil did not contest the event at the Canadian Trials instead entering the event having set a qualifying time at the 2023 Pan-Am Games. MacNeil placed 16h into the semifinal this morning, swimming 54.16.

Taking her spot in the semifinal will be the Czech Republic’s Barbora Seemanova, who was 17th this morning in a time of 54.66. Seemanova entered the meet as the 12th seed with an entry time of 53.50.

They really need to fix the 100/4×200 clash. It’s a bigger problem than the 200/1500 clash they fixed for the women.

Lol. Wasn’t worth it. The leadoff guy dropped a 1:50.

Still think AUS tops Korea for bronze but Hwang and his 1:43 probable split could have something to say about that

If Maggie hadn’t taken the 100 free spot was Penny eligible for it?

The only reason Maggie got the spot was because Penny didn’t make the time to qualify

No – there have been several articles posted here on swimswam on how she missed the I dividual cut, went to Rome to try and get and missed it again.

Penny is not eligible for the individual 100FR unfortunately

I’m guessing the down votes mean no she was not.
