The European men opened the 2024 Paris Olympics going 8 for 8 in individual gold medals until the streak was broken at the end of last night when China’s Pan Zhanle won the 100 freestyle. Although the streak was broken, the men’s success picked up right where it left off as Hungary’s Hubert Kos captured gold in the 200 backstroke tonight. This means that the European men have now won 9 out of 10 individual titles this meet.

Australia stays at the top of the medal table after leading since day 3. The women’s 4×200 free relay closed the night with the win to keep the country at the top.
The US still trails Australia by one gold medal but lead with 20 total medals. Kate Douglass picked up gold in the women’s 200 breaststroke tonight.
Greece and Switzerland joined the medal table after the men’s 200 backstroke. Apostolos Christou of Greece won silver in the event while Roman Mityukov of Switzerland won bronze.

The Americans are definitely favourites to top the medal table now. Actually was already the case before today with Short arriving here off form and then not converting any of the three gold chances yesterday.
Americans topping medal table was sealed 100% yesterday after ZSC and Mollie didn’t win .
The Aussies had a better meet in 2023 and it was pretty lame to claim otherwise. But this different. They are up 1 gold but the US has 9 more total medals. The US has had a better meet thus far.
The path is there for the Americans to pass the Aussies – sweep the medley relays, Ledecky winning the 800, then getting one more gold from someone (Finke, Dressel x2, and Douglass the candidates). 8 golds is likely enough to at least tie for the most golds. The medley that’s the most scary is the men’s, IMO, as if Qin is able to swim well the Chinese team will be really formidable, but with his struggles it does look better.

While McEvoy has a solid chance in the 50, I wouldn’t say he’s the prohibitive favourite, or even a solid fave after the semis. He’s there with a good chance though if he keeps it together, but the semi was interesting.
The 200IM is looking very interesting… all contenders look strong so really, I don’t know how anyone can choose a favourite there.
Easy, only 2 can really break 1.55 and one will break 1.54
Saying there is a path is an understatement. USA are the heavy favourites to top the table. It is possible for Australia but would take a miracle.
