In our GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series, we celebrate swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.
QNS AQUATIC CLUB SHINES AT NCAP INVITE
The QNS Aquatic Club, which trains out of pools in Queens and Nassau County, N.Y., had a very strong showing at the NCAP Invitational on Dec. 8-11 in College Park, Md.
Luke Moran, 10, won the high point award for 10&U boys despite being disqualified for a false start in the 100 freestyle, having touched first before the DQ. Moran set new personal best times en route to victories in the 50 free (27.36), 200 free (2:09.99), 50 fly (30.16) and 100 fly (1:07.38), and also took second with PBs in the 50 back and 100 back.
Julia Bak, 11, won the high point award in the girls’ 11-12 age group, clocking top times this season for 11-year-olds in the 50 free (24.45), 100 free (53.59), 50 fly (27.11), 100 fly (59.31) and 100 IM (1:01.88).
Nikko Tjahaya, 14, won the girls 13-14 100 breast (1:03.62), 200 IM (2:06.55) and 400 IM (4:28.43), with her 100 breast time ranking sixth this season among 14-year-olds.
Current QNS head coaches Kris Sweetman and Jonah Montgomery previously worked under coach Carle Fierro at the Westchester Aquatic Club, and while there, they assisted in coaching world champions Kate Douglass and Claire Weinstein as age groupers.
Sweetnam and Montgomery have based their new program on Carle’s and credit her for a lot of their success.
