George Washington Swimming & Diving Announces 2015-16 Schedule

WASHINGTON – The George Washington swimming and diving teams will host four meets at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool and face a top slate of competition in preparation for the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championships, first-year head coach James Winchester revealed on Monday.

The men’s squad will compete in eight meets, while the women’s team will compete in nine contests during the regular season.

“I am excited to announce our schedule for the 2015-16 season,” said Head Coach Winchester. “We have a great schedule ahead of us that will challenge our program, including A-10 women’s champion Richmond among other conference champions on both the men’s and women’s sides.”

The Colonials open the season at local rival Howard on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Bison’s Burr Gym Pool in Washington, DC. The Buff and Blue next travel to Baltimore to take on UMBC on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Retrievers claimed the women’s America East Conference title in 2015, while the men’s team won the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) crown last season.

GW will host its first meet of the season when Towson visits the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday, Nov. 7. The Tigers’ women’s team won the CAA title for the third consecutive year in 2015.

From Nov. 19-22, the Colonials will compete in the Magnus Cup Invitational hosted by Cleveland State University. Featuring nine programs a year ago, the Magnus Cup is slated to be GW’s largest event during the regular season.

The women’s squad hosts defending A-10 Champion Richmond on Saturday, Dec. 5th at the Charles E. Smith Center before a month-long hiatus from competition that will include a training trip to Fort Myers, Florida.

The Colonials return to campus for a pair of home meets as they welcome William & Mary on Saturday, Jan. 9 – who’s men’s squad claimed the CAA crown in 2015 – and crosstown rival Georgetown on Saturday, Jan. 16 for GW’s Senior Day meet.

Next up is a Revolutionary Rivalry bout as the Buff and Blue visit A-10 foe George Mason on Monday, Jan. 18 in Fairfax, Virginia. GW will conclude the regular season with a tri-meet in Norfolk, Virginia, featuring host Old Dominion and St. Andrews on Saturday, Jan. 23.

The 2016 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships will take place from Feb. 17-20 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Qualifying student-athltes will compete at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships and NCAA Swimming Championships in March.

“The level of competition we will face this year and our opportunities at the Magnus Cup and A-10 Championships will give our program a great avenue for growth,” said Head Coach Winchester. “I look forward to both of our teams improving within our conference, while also making a run at national level competitions with the NCAA Championships and Olympic Trials in mind.”
