FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason swimming and diving teams swept UMBC on Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The women’s team defeated the Retrievers, 202-98, while the men’s team posted a 188-110 victory.
On the women’s side, the team of juniors Anka Whelan, Emma DeJong and Shannon Judge along with sophomore Peyton Brehmer won the 200-yard medley relay to start the meet (1:45.87).
DeJong took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.67) with sophomore Angelina Zeidan second (1:58.12).
Whelan won the 100-yard backstroke (56.73), 200-yard backstroke (2:03.90) and 200-yard IM (2:10.54).
Junior Ali Tyler won the 100-yard freestyle (52.94).
Brehmer touched the wall first in both the 50-yard freestyle (23.66) and 100-yard butterfly (57.23).
The Patriots went one-two in the 100-yard breaststroke with sophomore Ainsley Toews first (1:07.78) and classmate Ally Yeary second (1:07.82).
Mason took the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly with senior Abigail Murtaugh first (2:06.07), freshman Carleigh Dillman second (2:12.96) and freshman Sarah Dichak third (2:13.49).
Freshman Kristen Ivey placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:40.02).
The team of DeJong, Brehmer, Judge and Tyler claimed the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:32.00).
Junior Emma McDonald won the three-meter (230.10) and placed fifth in the one-meter event (205.35).
On the men’s side, the combination of juniors Tyler Lentine and Zane Roberts, sophomore Tate Anderson and freshman Ian Rodgers won the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.86).
Anderson took the top spot in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.15) and 200-yard backstroke (1:50.29), Lentine won the 100-yard breaststroke (57.73), Rodgers finished first in both the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.18) and 100-yard butterfly (49.87) and Roberts won the 50-yard freestyle (20.57).
Freshman Alex Crown won the 100-yard freestyle (9:30.80) with classmate Cody Scifres second (9:51.06).
The Patriots went one-two in the 500-yard freestyle with Scifres first (4:42.93) and sophomore Max Fermayer second (4:50.96).

Fairfax, Va. – The UMBC swimming squads had their final tune-up before the 2023-24 America East Championships as they took on an inspired host George Mason squad.
Sophomore Bruna de Padua and senior Daniel Nicusan won two events apiece to lead the way for the Retrievers.
On the men’s side, the Patriots won, 188-110, while capturing the women’s meet, 202-98.
“Mason is heck of a team and they gave us a good run today,” said Head Swimming Coach Matt Donovan. “I’m happy with how we performed today. A lot of the elements we’ve been working on in practice showed up in the pool this meet.
“It’s time to go into championship meet prep mode for America East. We are really excited for the next three weeks.”
In the diving well, freshman Ember Stennett and sophomore Anders Logas won the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions respectively as the divers outscored their counterparts, 43-31. The divers will compete at the Navy Invitational next weekend.
“After several weeks of winter training, it was great to get back to competition,” said Head Diving Coach Jeff Fisher. “We saw some new dives performed and overcame a few significant challenges. I am looking forward to finishing the season strong and going into the conference championships stronger than ever.”
de Padua continued her brilliant season, cruising to victories in the 1000 and 500 freestyle events.
Stennett amassed a score of 232.50, edging teammate sophomore Alicia Buteau (227.40) on the lower board. The Retriever freshman nearly won both events, as she was awarded 227.63 points on the 3-meter board, less than three behind Mason’s victor, Emma McDonald. Sophomore Isabella Evers captured third with a mark of 211.43.
Junior Elze Bielskute also captured gold for UMBC, touching first in the 200 yard breaststroke and beating the field by over two seconds.
Seniors Rola Hussein (100 backstroke) and Makaela Hill (100 freestyle) earned second-place finishers for the visitors.

Nicusan triumphed in the 100 yard backstroke, then came back to prevail comfortably in the 200 yard breaststroke.
Logas amassed a score of 247.13, edging teammate freshman Andy Vines (232.73) on the 3-meter board. On the 1-meter board, Vines missed out on gold by less than a point, totaling 240.00 points, while Logas placed third with a score of 229.95.
Senior Bode Neale also earned gold for UMBC, taking the 100 yard (46.36) freestyle. After building a lead in the first 50 yards, he held off Mason’s Zane Roberts to win by 0.17 seconds. Neale place second in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.01.
Senior Ethan Riser earned silvers in both butterfly events, while juniors Christian Coleman and JJ Chapman finished in second place in the 100 yard breaststroke and 200 individual medley respectively.
