With three 2016 British National Championship titles under her belt, freestyle specialist Jazmin Carlin has already struck gold, in more ways than one.
The 25-year old Welsh swimmer was on-site at her nation’s Royal Mint as the outfit released the official Team GB gold edition 50p coin this week. Endorsed by Team GB and produced exclusively under license by The Royal Mint, the coin is the only official UK piece of its kind, produced in 22 carat gold.
Just as in 2012 in the lead-up to London, The Royal Mint’s official coin marks the organization’s support of Team GB, with just 306 exclusive coins produced, at a sale price of £725.00 (approximately $1,000) each.
Says Anne Jessopp, the Royal Mint’s Director of Commemorative Coin, “We are thrilled to be able to show our support for Team GB in this way, and celebrate the talent, dedication and Olympian spirit of the athletes chosen to represent us in what we hope will be yet another piece of Great British sporting history for the team.”
Of her involvement in kicking off the coin’s release, Carlin commented, “I am honoured to have been invited to The Royal Mint to strike the official Team GB gold edition 50p coin. I am delighted to have qualified for the Olympic Games and am looking forward to competing with the rest of Team GB athletes in Rio this summer.”
The description of the coin directly from the Royal Mint’s site reads as follows:
This is the only official United Kingdom coin marking Team GB’s participation at the 2016 Olympic Games, a great way to show your support and mark each gold medal winning moment. Featuring an original design by the team at design consultancy Uniform, this 22 carat gold coin is struck to flawless Proof standard. It is presented in a wooden display case with a booklet about the origins of Team GB.
