Futures Qualifier Sara Mayer Verbally Commits to University of South Dakota

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sara Mayer of Wausau, WI has verbally committed to swim for the University of South Dakota’s class of 2025. The sprint specialist swims club at the Woodson Y Northern Swimmers and she is a senior at DC Everest Senior High.

I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of South Dakota. I chose to continue my career at USD because USD checked all my boxes. The campus was absolutely beautiful! I had a good connection with the coaches and teammates. As well as the biology and Spanish program fit very well for my future goals in becoming a radiologist. Thank you to my family, coaches, and teammates for everything throughout this process! Go Yotes!!

In early November, Mayer earned four gold medals at the Wisconsin Girls DI Sectional champs at Hudson. She powered to the wall 3.4 seconds ahead of the next swimmer in the 100 fly and she won the 200 free by 5.45 seconds. She swam on DC Everest’s 200 and 400 free relays anchoring each one. She split a 50 free time of 24.09 and a 100 free time of 51.91.

Mayer most recently competed at the Wisconsin DI State Championships, swimming the 100 fly and the 200 free. She finished 6th in the 100 fly, posting a personal best time of 56.99, which was a 2019 Futures qualifying time. Her new personal best time of 1:52.63 in the 200 free earned her 5th place. She again swam the anchor leg of both of her team’s relays, splitting a 23.59 and a 52.01.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 free – 24.18
  • 100 free – 52.88
  • 200 free – 1:52.63
  • 100 fly – 56.99
  • 100 back – 58.64

The University of South Dakota finished second behind the University of Denver at the 2020 Summit League Championships. Mayer’s times would have placed her in the B-final in the 50 and 100 free and the 100 fly, and the A-final in the 100 back and 200 free. During the 2019-2020 season, she would have been the Yotes’ fastest 200 freestyler and their 4th fastest 100 flyer behind Cassie Ketterling, Madisen Lavin, and Madilyn Sindelar. All three women will be seniors by the time Mayer joins the team.

Aside from swimming, in her free time, Mayer enjoys volunteering in her community. She is a Volunteer Assistant Log Rolling Instructor at her local YMCA. She has served as the secretary and president of Peyton’s Promise, a local non-profit student-led organization that collects food for local food pantries. Mayer has helped “to run and coordinate two drives, a food drive called Hunt Down Hunger which brings in over 15 tons of food each year, and a pop tab drive called Pop Tabs for Sophia that collects over 500 pounds of pop tabs each year for the Ronald McDonald House.

South Dakota has already received verbals from diver Bella Maceranka and Winter Juniors qualifier Emma Clark for its class of 2025.
