The Potomac Valley Swimming Senior Championships earlier this month proved to be a good peek at what a few college programs around that region are getting in the future.

The meet came shortly after high school state meets in the region and offered swimmers a chance to swim events not usually offered on the high school schedule.

Gwyn Frick (Liberty signee), Alyssa Sagle (Virginia commit) and Kai Henrikson-Brandt (Johns Hopkins signee) each won three events to headline the individual standouts.

Frick won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.47), the 100 IM (55.50) and the 400 IM (4:15.19), with her times in the 100 and 400 IM’s being personal bests. She was also second in the 50 back (25.35), an event that’s rare at meets for Americans in this age group. Frick set a personal-best time of 25.15 in that event during prelims.

Also in the women’s competition, Sagle won the 50 freestyle (23.35), the 50 backstroke (25.14) and the 50 fly in a time of 24.51.

Both Frick and Sagle swim for Nations Capital Swim Club.

Henrikson-Brandt won three events in the men’s competition, those being the 50 back (personal best time of 22.73), the 100 back (season best time of 49.65) and the 100 butterfly (season best time of 49.24). He was also second in the 200 back (1:47.91), third in the 50 fly (personal best time of 22.40) and third in the 200 IM (personal best time of 1:53.35).

Henrikson-Brandt swims for DC Wave.

In the team competition, Nations Capital Swim Club easily swept the combined, women’s and men’s titles.

Other individual standouts were:

  • Samantha Roemer of Nations Capital Swim Club won two events in the women’s competition, those being the 100 free (personal best time of 50.85) and the 200 free (personal best time of 1:50.93). She was also second in the 50 free (23.38).
  • Also in the women’s event, NC State commit Emma Cigna of Nations Capital Swim Club won the 1000 free in a personal best time of 9:59.48 and the 100 fly in a time of 53.79. She was also second in the 50 fly with a personal best time of 24.99.
  • Alex Grocholski of Occoquan Swimming Inc, who is a Virginia Tech commit, won two events in the men’s competition. He won the 100 free in a personal best time of 45.40 and the 50 breast in a personal best time of 26.00. He swam a personal best time of 50.51 in the 100 back, coming in third.
