Former Louisville Backstroker Kristina Steins to Transfer to Toronto’s York University

Kristina Steins, a former Canadian national team member who currently swims for Latvia, will be transferring to York University in Toronto, Ontario this fall.

When asked about Steins coming to York University, head coach Derek McGregor said, “A swimmer of Kristina’s abilities is a great addition not only to our team but the OUA in general. I expect great things from Kristina this year in and out of the pool to help lead the rebuild of the York Lions team.”

Steins represented Canada at the 2012 Jr. Pan Pac Championships, where she placed 7th in the 100 back. A year later, she swam at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships, where she placed 32nd in the same event.

Steins swam for the University of Louisville during the 2013-2014 and 2014-15 season where, as a freshman, she placed fourth in the 200 back (1:56.93) and sixth in the 100 back (54.26 prelims) at the 2015 ACC Championships.

Steins has changed her sporting citizenship since the 2013 World Championships and is currently a member of the Latvian National Team. She holds the Latvian national records in all 3 backstroke events in long course meters. She will be representing Latvia at FINA World Championships in Budapest this summer, and her current best times are as follows

SCM

  • 50 back – 27.90
  • 100 back – 58.94
  • 200 back – 2:09.88
  • 50 free – 25.94
  • 50 fly – 27.92

LCM

  • 50 back – 28.94
  • 100 back – 1:00.85
  • 200 back – 2:14.87

Steins is at the scoring level in all the above events at USport; if those times hold, she would be the first woman to score points at the Championship level in over a decade for the Lions.

Derek was the assistant Coach at the Time when Kristina Steins and Sinead Russell and many other National level swimmers where swimming we where team mates, I do not recall him being on the Pool deck coaching at any of these National Championship in which we achieved these International honors. In 2012 -13 -14-15-16- to date has been Coached by Coaches at Team Dolphins of… Read more »

100% correct, I was an assistant coach in the Dolphins program and work with all members of the team on different locations on different days but 100% was not the coach of record for Kristina at any time.
