Fly/IM Specialist Ethan Hansen Verbally Commits to Arizona State for 2021-22

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ethan Hansen of Mount Kelly, England has verbally committed to Arizona State University for 2021-22.

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Arizona State University. The opportunity to work with Bob Bowman and the Sun Devils team in world class facilities so that I can pursue my swimming goals is a once in a lifetime opportunity. ASU also offers me the chance to further my studies at a business school. Thank you to the coaching team at ASU for inviting me to join this incredible program. I would also like to thank my family, my friends, my coach Emma Collings-Barnes and the SPC at Mount Kelly, Nick Dobson at Knox Grammar School and Jon Rudd and his Swim Ireland pathway team for helping me achieve this dream. Go the Sun Devils.”

Hansen moved from Sydney, Australia to the UK in September 2018 when Jon Rudd invited him to be a member of the Swim Ireland Performance Pathway Program. Hansen currently trains under Emma Collings-Barnes at Mount Kelly, a boarding school with an elite swim program. He focuses mainly on the 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM and had qualified for the 2020 Irish and British Olympic Trials in multiple events.

Hansen wrapped up short course (meters) season in December 2019 at the Swim England National Winter Championships and then the Irish National Short Course Championships. Only just 17, he placed 9th in the men’s open 200 fly, 8th in the men’s open 200 IM, and 7th in the men’s open 400 IM at the former meet and was 3rd in the 200 fly and 5th in the 200 back at the latter. His PBs from those meets ranked him as one of the top U18s in the UK and Ireland:

  • 200 SCM fly – 1:59.82 (1:47.94 converted to SCY)
  • 200 SCM IM – 2:01.03 (1:49.03 converted to SCY)
  • 400 SCM IM – 4:20.49 (3:54.67 converted to SCY)

Hansen considers himself more of a LCM swimmer and plans to join the Sun Devils “to be coached by Bob Bowman and to train with some of the fastest Butterfly and IM swimmers in the NCAA Championships.” He will suit up with fellow class of 2025 commit Emilio Perez. The two complement each other well: Perez is a sprint butterflier who has been 47.97 in the 100 yard fly.

Judging by the turnover at ASU over the past few years, this could end up being a big mistake.
