7-time Olympic gold medalist, Caeleb Dressel, has been on a long road back to sprinting prominence. In the men’s 100 freestyle final at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, he notched his spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, touching the wall in third place.
Chris Guiliano hit the wall first in 47.38, slightly slower than his semifinal time of 47.25, but the Notre Dame swimmer had already made the U.S. Olympic Team in the 200 free by finishing second in that event. Jack Alexy came up second, and Caeleb Dressel, the 2020 defending Olympic Champion in this event, touched the wall third. Fans may have expected disappointment from Dressel, but he beamed ear-to-ear in relief.
Back at the 2022 World Championships Dressel left mid-meet due to a mental health event. He was simply too exhausted from years of competition and fighting to stay at the top. A long rest period followed, by what seemed like an even longer return to competitive form. In fact, many swimming fans believed Dressel might not return to form and be a podium contender. His time, 47.53, was his fastest effort since winning at the Tokyo Olympics, and it was enough to put him on Team USA in what will surely be the toughest 4×100 freestyle relay to beat in Paris.
Hunter Armstrong, the backstroke specialist, came up 4th, rounding out this quartet of 100 freestyle sprinters. All four sprint stars entered the top-10 World Rankings with their times in the 100 freestyle.
