PITTSBURGH – Duquesne swimming and diving showed out at the Western PA Invite this weekend, winning 14 different events. Sophomore Haley Scholer was the star of the show, winning six events of her own. The Dukes also took first in both the one-meter and 3m dives.
Friday:
The team of junior Reagan Linkous, junior Abby Mele, Scholer and freshman Kayla Johnson placed first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:54.04.
In the 200 IM, Scholer and senior Emma Menzer took the top-two spots with times of 2:06.53 and 2:07.53, respectively. Duquesne also placed first and second in the 100 breast – this time it was Mele (1:05.50) and freshman Sydney Severini (1:05.64) besting the other swimmers.
The Dukes’ dominance continued as Scholer finished first in the 200 back with a time of 2:01.61 and Linkous was right behind her at 2:02.16. In the 500 free, sophomore Orla Egan finished in fourth-place with a time of 5:06.61.
Scholer and Johnson kept the momentum going by placing third and fourth in the 100 free with times of 53.27 and 53.34, respectively. In the 200 fly, freshman Claudia Rzeznik placed fourth with a time of 2:09.70.
To end Friday night, the group of senior Sydney Sherman, junior Leah Reisker, Scholer and Johnson swam to a first-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.35.
Over to the diving side, graduate student Amy Read took first-place in the one-meter-dives, scoring 312.05. Senior Sydney O’Donnell finished behind her in second-place with a score of 289.15.
Freshman Ashley Felitsky qualified for the NCAA Division-I Diving Championship by scoring 274.90 in the 1m dives.
Saturday:
To kick things off on Saturday, Duquesne won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.81. The team consisted of sophomore Hayley Taylor, Severini, senior Mara Voytek and Sherman. Right behind that group was Scholer, Mele, Rzeznik and Johnson, finishing in second with a time of 1:47.17.
Duquesne took the top-two spots in the 200 free as Egan and Menzer finished in first and second with times of 1:54.12 and 1:55.12, respectively.
Scholer picked up yet another win, this time in the 100 fly, with a time of 57.94. Rzeznik took third-place in the race with a time of 58.53.
In the 200 breast, Duquesne took the top-three spots. Severini finished in first at 2:21.79, Egan in second at 2:25.19 and Menzer in third at 2:25.47. Scholer wasn’t done yet, as she swam to another first-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 56.37.
The Dukes showed out in the 50 free, taking four of the top-four spots. Johnson (24.31) finished first, Sherman (24.49) finished third, Scholer (24.72) finished fourth and freshman Katie Simpson (24.77) finished fifth.
In the final event of the day, the 400 free relay, the Dukes capped off their dominant performance with one last win. Sherman, Jenkins, Scholer and Johnson finished in 3:32.66.
In the 3m dives on Saturday, O’Donnell took first-place with a score of 299.90. Felitsky and Read finished in third- and fourth-place with scores of 279.80 and 277.00, respectively.

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s swimming and diving team competed in the Western Pennsylvania Invitational hosted by the University of Pittsburgh on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28.
Top Performances Friday
- Junior Santiago Gomez touched first in the 200-yard IM in 1:59.98.
- Freshman Rohit Garikipati improved his season time in the 500-yard freestyle by touching first in 4:37.96.
- Freshman Kevin Zhou picked up a season-best time in the 100-yard freestyle with a first-place showing in 46.72.
- Sophomore James Pascale was the top swimmer in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 1:54.54.
- Senior Seaver Dahlgren won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.22.
- Graduate student Jud Kyle placed third on the 3-meter board with 363.80 points after six dives
Top Performances Saturday
- Junior Aidan Smith won the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best showing in 1:43.66.
- Zhou had another season-best time for the weekend in the 100-yard butterfly when he touched first in 50.14.
- Senior Aidan Wagner won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.30.
- Garikipati swam the 1,000-yard freestyle alone and finished with a season-best time of 9:38.32 which is also a team-best time for the year.
- Kyle placed second on the 1-meter board with 312.15 points after six dives.
Next Up
- The Tartans will travel to Emory University for the four-day University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships which are scheduled to start on Wednesday, February 8.
