It was a fast mid-season meet in which three pool records fell, as Division I Duke University beat Division II Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday. The Blue Devils won 13 of 14 swimming events in the women’s meet, and 9 of 14 in the men’s meet.

The Duke women got off to a good start with a 1:43.40-to-1:44.50 victory in the 200 medley relay behind Alyssa Marsh, Ashleigh Shanley, Leah Goldman, and Lexy Aitchison. Marsh followed up with twin wins in the 50 free (23.13) and 100 free (51.24), then ended the meet with a 22.33 anchor on Duke’s winning 200 free relay. Shanley won the 100 breast (1:03.59) and Aitchison posted the top time in the 200 IM (2:06.41), breaking the pool record with her swim. Mickayla Hinkle was another two-event winner for the Blue Devils; she claimed first in the 100 back (55.39) and 200 back (2:00.90).

Other Duke event winners were Brittany Kampfer in the 1000 free (10:16.76), Brittany Friese in the 200 free (1:50.11), Verity Abel in the 500 free (4:57.23), and Kylie Jordan in the 100 fly (55.72). Colleen Wixted won the 200 fly for Duke, and both she (2:03.54) and second-place teammate Anna Quinn (2:03.88) touched in pool-record time.

Dasha Talanova led the Royals’ efforts with a win in the 200 breast (2:17.82) and a second-place in the 100 breast (1:04.88). Sarah Reamy was runner-up in the 1000 free (10:26.13), as was Hannah Peiffer in the 100 back (56.06) and 100 fly (57.13).

The men took down a trio of pool records, beginning with Queens’ Dion Dreesens in the 200 free. He finished 5 seconds ahead of the field with 1:36.80. In the very next event teammate Paul Pijulet broke the pool record in the men’s 100 back with 47.65. Both Pijulet and eventual winner Max St George of Duke came in under the previous pool record in the 200 back; St George out-touched Pijulet by 2/100, 1:46.05 to 1:46.07.

The Royals won three more events: Nick Arakelian was first to the wall in both the 500 free (4:38.68) and 200 IM (1:50.33), and Ben Mayes won the 50 free in 20.82. Mayes was runner-up in the 100 free (45.85), while Arakelian was runner-up in the 1000 free (9:25.83).

Duke took the rest of the swimming events, including both relays. Matt Johnson kicked things off with a 9:24.97 win over Arakelian in the 1000. Peter Kropp and Judd Howard prevailed in the 100 (55.01) and 200 (2:02.76) breaststroke events, respectively. Kazumu Takabayashi gave the Blue Devils a victory in the 200 fly (1:50.59), and Dylan Payne edged Queens’ Zach Bunner, 49.17 to 49.93, to win the 100 fly. Bradley Cline (45.68) beat Mayes of Queens by .17 to earn the 100 free crown.

Duke is off until January 14, when it hosts South Carolina in Durham. Queens will next host Bluegrass Mountain Conference foe, Catawba College, on Saturday, December 17 for Senior Day.
