Drury Absent from NCAA Division II Pre-Selection Sheets

Update: a new version of DII was posted on Tuesday with Drury included. See the updated version here. Original article is below.

Pre-selection psych sheets for the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships have been released, and there is an ominous absence. 22-time NCAA Division II champions Drury are not included on this initial version of the psych sheet. We have reached out to Drury and the NCAA to ascertain the reason for their absence, but have not heard back.

Among the teams that are included, however, is Queens, who have swept the NCAA D2 titles for 3 straight seasons.

This year’s Division II Championship meet will be hosted at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in North Carolina.

D2 has slightly different entry rules than the other two divisions. For starters, with the same 7 event limit, student-athletes are allowed to entered up to 4 individual events, rather than just 3. Division II also includes the 1000 free at its championship meet, which neither of the other two divisions do.

Participation Caps:

  • Men – 175 participants (157 swimmers/18 divers)
  • Women – 205 participants (183 swimmers/22 divers)

A summary of the selection procedures for swimmers is that swimmers receiving “A” cuts get first priority of entry. Then, like Division I, swimmers will be added 1 at a time until the caps of 157 and 183, respectively, are hit. Whatever “row” (aka, all 17th ranked swimmers) where that cap was hit, the previous row will all be invited, and on the bisected row, swimmers will be chosen based on how close a time is to the corresponding “A” time standard. For full procedures, see section 2.4 of the Participation Manual.

Why are the D2 invite lists the only ones that are not out yet? Seems ridiculous that it is taking so long.

It’s still wrong. Too many swimmers.

It’s a pre-selection list. They draw the cutlines after that.

That seems so backwards from the way the process is explained. Don’t they ADD swimmers, rather than subtract?

SWIMMOM, the pre-selection is all athletes that have been entered with a B cut or faster. They’ll start filling out each row of each event and once the cap is met they’ll drawl the line. Men individual events will be 50% at 21, 25% at 22 and 25% at 23 (based on last years info) women will be 28 almost across the board. Last year was 28 except 400IM where it was 27. Hope that helps!

Isn’t there a challenge period after the psych sheet is first posted? I’m sure this will be corrected

I train in the same pool with Drury university in the mornings and their best swimmers have been swimming.

Find it odd that Drury isn’t entered in the meet. It is not like the OME process is new, it was the same process for last year meet too. Also, if you go on Drury athletic website and go their to swim page schedule. The NCAA Championships is listed on their schedule. Braden I hope you find out an answer soon.

I see a few things other than just Drury that are missing from this sheet… for instance, in the men’s 200 IM 1:51.60 (the last B cut time) is listed as 57th place on the pre-selection sheet, it is 68th on the top times sheet. Only three of those in the top times sheet are Drury. There are 72 names in the men’s 50 free on the pre-selection sheet, and 94 B-times in the top times sheet, 5 are Drury.

I mean, unless there are that many people who have opted to sit out the national meet, or if I’m misunderstanding the methodology of the pre-selection sheet.

Did those swimmers just not ENTER the event as a possibility? They can only enter 4.

The entries were due last night at 11:59pm eastern. No one is “automatically” entered. The coaches (or whoever handles the administrative detail for each school) has to officially enter the athletes via the OME in the USA Swimming database. In some cases, some may have decided not to bother entering athletes that are in the 60th range (or whatever the number is). So it’s not an “obvious” omission, just one made by the particular schools.

For what it’s worth, every other school seems to have been able to get those entries in by the posted deadline that’s been known since September…

But, again, it isn’t just Drury. There are teams with some swimmers on there but not others (Missouri S&T, Truman State, Lindenwood, UIndy just to name three). I understand that there is a entry deadline but I have been involved or at least following closely DII swimming since 2007 and I’ve never seen quite this many inconsistencies in the national psych sheet – pre-selection or not.

Again, if these partially-entered teams are truly not entering the swimmers that aren’t listed in this document but have cuts, then so be it and I’m wrong. But that seems a little… inconsistent.

I believe that’s exactly what those other teams have done.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Drury is involved with not following the rules with this process: https://swimswam.com/drury-swimming-diving-head-coach-issued-public-reprimand-by-ncaa/
