Sandpipers Distance Ace Devin Bauman Commits to Drexel with High Impact Times

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Palo Verde High School senior Devin Bauman has signed to swim for Drexel University in the fall of 2022. Bauman trains with the Sandpipers of Nevada in Las Vegas, which is home to arguably the best junior distance training group in the country. Like Olympian teammates Katie Grimes and Bella Sims, Bauman is a distance specialist, having qualified for the Open Water Junior National Championships.

“I am excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Drexel University. Thanks to my coaches, family, and friends for their support. #FearTheDragon”
Last November, Bauman was a multiple event finalist at the Nevada State Championships. His top finish came in the 100 back where, after having to earn a finals spot in a prelims swim off, he won the event in a personal best time of 53.54. He also earned a second swim in the 50 free (22.85), 200 free (1:42.24), 100 fly (53.82), 200 fly (1:58.25), 200 IM (2:03.42), and 400 IM (4:12.62).
As a high school freshman, Bauman was a part of the Palo Verde High School team that won the Nevada 3A and 4A State Championships. At that meet, he contested the 50 free, taking 8th in 22.81.

Drexel is coming off a 2020-2021 season that saw them take third at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships behind Towson and UNC-Wilmington. The Dragons were led by a pair of international athletes, with both Paris Raptis of Greece and Kacper Karnik of Poland winning multiple medals. While Raptis is set to graduate after this season, Karnik will have two years of overlap with Bauman.

Bauman will also share the pool in the fall with some of Drexel’s top distance swimmers. Last year, freshman Will Soleo claimed the top time in the 1650 free, leading the field by over five seconds. He was joined in the top-8 by Jake McBride, a junior this season. McBride also added a 6th place finish in the 500 free.

Last year, it took 4:32.15/15:57.12 to medal in the distance freestyle events at CAA Championships.

With his high school times, Bauman already holds a time in the 1000 free that is faster than the program’s freshman record. Currently, the record is held by Matt Hickey, who set the record at 9:31.03 in 1993. Bauman is also just seconds off the 500 and 1650 records.
