DENVER – The University of Denver women’s swimming and diving program opened the season with a win in the Denver Relays, while the men’s program finished second, defeating Wyoming in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at El Pomar Nataorium.

Diving Highlights:
Nathan CoxJon Brouillette and Eli Lubell combined for a score of 285.7 to take the men’s 1-meter and a 239.65 to finish second in the men’s 3-meter.

On the women’s side, Zora OpalkaOlivia Gordon and Chloe Reynolds finished in second on both boards with scores of 236.85 and 253.70 on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, respectively.

Swimming Highlights:
Erika Remington earned wins in four different relays on Saturday afternoon, joining 2022 NCAA National Championships qualifier Natalie Arky, who also had four wins for the Pioneers.

Mia Moulden and Megan Lucyshyn also helped lead the Pios to the Denver Relays victory with three wins on their resume. Sophia BrickerAli Beay and Kali Metuzals rounded out Denver’s multi-event winners.

DENVER—The Colorado Mesa University men’s swimming and diving team combined for seven event wins as they defeated a pair of NCAA Division I opponents for the second straight weekend, this time taking down host Denver University and the University of Wyoming in Saturday’s Denver Relays.

The Maverick men won six of the ten swimming relays and took first place in the 3-meter diving event to score 226 team points, besting the host Pioneers by 28 points and the Cowboys by 58.

Last week, CMU had finished higher than both Air Force and Grand Canyon at the Intermountain Shootout.  In just two meets, the NCAA Division II Mavericks have now defeated four Division I foes from three different states and two different conferences.  Denver won its eighth Summit League title in nine years in 2022.  The Mavs’ other three Division I wins have come against teams from the Western Athletic Conference.

Meanwhile, CMU’s women, who knocked off Northern Colorado and Grand Canyon last week, finished third on Saturday with 164 points.  Denver won the team chase with 244 while Wyoming was second with 198.

After winning the 3-meter diving event with a relay score of 310.50 points, the Mavericks won the first men’s swimming event taking the 200-yard medley relay in 1:31.27.  Ben SampsonMahmoud ElgayarDejan Urbanek and Kuba Kiszczak were on that team.

Felipe D’OrsiJackson MoeLane Austin and Andrew Scoggin then won the 100-yard (4×25) free relay in 37.29 seconds.

Two events later, Sampson, Austin and Scoggin the won the 3×100 backstroke relay in 2:29.61 as Sampson swam an improved NCAA Championship provisional qualifying 48.42-second opening split.

Sampson, who is the reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year and Swimmer of the Week then won his third of five events as he, Elgayar, Urbanek and D’Orsi combined to win the 100 medley relay in 41.56 seconds.

Sampson, Kiszczak, John Walgast and Matheus Laperriere then claimed the 400 (4×100) individual medley relay by more than two seconds with a time of 3:29.15.

Minutes later, Sampson, D’Orsi, Kiszczak and Austin took the 200 free relay in 1:22.77, winning by nearly 1 ½ seconds.

The Maverick women also got into the winner’s circle early in the meet as freshman Olivia Hansson and Ada Qunell bookended the 3×500 free relay to a nine second victory.  Amelia Kinnard also swam the middle leg on that team.  Hansson posted an altitude-adjusted opening-leg split of 5:02.74,

The Mavs then took second in both the 4×25 free and 3×100 back events before finishing third in the 3×100 breast and 4×25 medley relays.

CMU also took third in the 500-yard crescendo relay event which saw swimmers swim 50, 100, 150 and 200-yard freestyle legs.

Davy BrownLily BorgenheimerMaddi Moran and Ellie Wilke then finished second in the 4×100 individual medley relay, the penultimate event of the meet.

Both Maverick units will be off next week before returning to home water, taking on Wyoming in their only dual meet of the fall on Oct. 22 in Grand Junction.
