USC’s Kaitlyn Dobler won the women’s 100 breast in Irvine tonight, getting out to an early lead, then hold off a ferocious late charge by University of Denver Hilltoppers 17-year-old Emma Weber. The 17-year-old got her hands on the wall just behind Dobler, finishing in 1:07.62.
The swim was a lifetime best for Weber, and her first time under 1:08 in her career. Her pervious best was 1:08.04, which she swam in April of this year. This morning, Weber swam a 1:08.55 in prelims, clocking the fastest time of the morning. Here is a split comparison between Weber’s best time swim from tonight, her prelims swim from today, and her previous best from April:
Splits | 2021 FL GAIN Invitaional | 2021 Speedo Summer Championships – Irvine PRELIMS | 2021 Speedo Summer Championships – Irvine FINALS |
50m | 32.05 | 32.08 | 31.97 |
100m | 35.99 | 36.47 | 35.65 |
Final Time | 1:08.04 | 1:08.55 | 1:07.62 |
Compared to her previous best, the biggest difference between Weber’s swim this morning and her previous best was the 2nd 50. This morning, Weber was just 0.03 seconds slower than April on the first 50, but then she was 0.48 seconds slower coming home. Conversely, in tonight’s race, Weber was 0.08 seconds faster on the first 50 than she was in her previous best swim. She coupled that faster first 50 with a 0.34-seconds-faster 2nd 50 to establish her new lifetime best.
