Day one of the Colonial Athletic Association champs was a competitive one. Mid-major teams from across the Mid-Atlantic gathered in Hampton, Virginia for several close relay showdowns and a new conference record. Score wise, defending champions UNCW ended the day slightly trail Delaware on the men’s side and Delaware and William & Mary on the women’s side.
200 medley relay
William & Mary kicked off the meet with a new conference record in the women’s 200 medley relay. The team of Julie Addison (25.28), Ellie Scherer (27.49), Lindsay Juhlin (23.27), and Caroline Burgeson (22.44) put together a 1:38.48, which undercuts their own 1:38.53 record from 2023.
Coming in eight tenths behind the Tribe for second was UNCW. In this relay, Cameron Snowden threw down a quick 23.01 on butterfly, the fastest of the event. Delaware and Northeastern joined William & Mary as the only teams under 1:40, going 1:39.66 and 1:39.87 respectively.
In the men’s event, Delaware nearly joined William & Mary with a new conference record. Gavin Currie (21.95), Toni Sabev (23.28), DJ Fechtman (20.66), and Matvei Namakonov (18.81) won the event by about a half second, going 1:24.70 to just miss their conference record from last year, 1:24.56. Drexel got second in 1:25.25. UNCW’s 1:25.61 was good enough for third, getting off to an early lead thanks to Jack Vanhowe’s 21.37 backstroke lead-off
800 free relay
Delaware made it back-to-back wins by taking the women’s 800 free relay. The Blue Hens’ final time was 7:18.57, led off by Lauren Hartel (1:49.20) then Olivia Willemsen (1:49.54), Anthi Lyra (1:51.36), and Judy Liu (1:48.47). William and Mary anchor Flynn Truskett, who split 1:48.31, almost ran down Delaware, but she ultimately fell short by .03.
Northeastern’s Hannah Seward pulled off the fastest split in the field, going 1:47.81. Her team wound up fourth overall in 7:20.70
Defending men’s and women’s champions, UNCW, got their first swim win of the meet in the men’s 800 free relay. The squad of Jacob Duracinsky (1:37.55), Shaw Satterfield (1:35.08), William Carrico (1:35.53), and Nathan Jao (1:36.83) combined for a final winning time of 6:24.99, about 1.75 seconds ahead of second place Delaware. William & Mary Tribe swimmer Aiden Bond produced a 1:34.45 split, the fastest 200 of the final.
In the only diving event of the night, men’s 1m, the UNCW Seahawks scored a 1-2 finish thanks to Ethan Badrian and Nicholas Newis.
