Just as University of Stirling’s Duncan Scott has established himself as Scotland’s premier freestyler, through an incredible run of performances, new Stirling teammate Kathleen Dawson has proven she is her nation’s backstroking extraordinaire.
Earlier this year we reported how the 19-year-old scored a shiny new Scottish National Record in the women’s 100 LCM backstroke, becoming the first female Scot to dip beneath the minute threshold in the event. She followed that mega performance up with a new National Record in the 200m backstroke (LCM) while competing at the 2016 British Championships.
While competing on night 2 of this year’s British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships, Dawn scored yet another Scottish National Record. She lowered her own 200m backstroke SCM mark, taking it to a new low of 2:06.05 for the win. That crushed her old time of 2:06.74 she swam in June of 2015 in Toronto.
Dawson owns Scotland’s national records in the 50m/100m/200m backstroke events across both SCM and LCM.
While competing at her first senior European Championships meet this past summer, Dawson took bronze in the 100m backstroke event (59.58). She also won gold as a member of Great Britain’s 400m medley relay squad.
