Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen already cranked out an impressive 400m freestyle performance last night at the Swim Open Stockholm, producing a new national record of 3:44.35.
But the 21-year-old took himself to an entirely new level with his 1500m free race this evening, firing off a monster effort of 14:34.91.
Wiffen’s result not only establishes a huge personal best but it now inserts the Irishman among the best-ever performers in the grueling event.
Entering this competition, Wiffen’s career-quickest rested at the 14:51.79 he produced at the 2022 Commonwealth Games to earn the silver medal. That means tonight’s result knocked well over 15 seconds off of his own swiftest performance en route to ranking as the 4th best performer in history.

Tonight’s performance is simply in line with the trajectory for on-fire Wiffen. Last year he became Ireland’s first-ever European Record holder when he clocked a time of 7:25.96 in the SCM 800 free.
He is the national record holder in the aforementioned LCM 400m free as well as the 800m free with his 7:46.32 from last year’s World Championships. The Loughborough athlete also notched new Irish marks in the SCM 400 and 1500 freestyle events last December.
Remarkably, the opening 800m free from Wiffen’s race this evening ties the 7:46.32 national record from Budapest.
Is this on video link anywhere?
Not that we’ve seen, but if you find one please let me know and I’ll add it!
A seventeen second improvement on his PB! Ok, it is over 30 laps but still …..
He only has the 3 all time greats ahead of him. Hackett in 2001, what a swim, what a swimmer.
That’s an unbelievable swim! Wiffen is improving so fast he’s already reached another level from yesterday.
Can’t remember which SwimSwam writer picked Wiffen to have a cracking year this year but whoever it was kudos to you he’s on fire
🙂
Oh my god. Wtf. Dude is coming for that gold medal! This really is genuinely shocking.
That Hackett swim! I remember it so well. Mind boggling.
Me too!
And what to say about the 800 against Thorpe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQqNk5dZEPA
Weird that Auböck’s 1:45.11 (200 free) in prelims doesn’t get any mention. I think he is also training at Loughborough.
I read that he swam 1.48.7 in prelims and 1.46.2 in the final this evening. 1.45.11 is his NR from Worlds
Ok thanks, my fault.
