• The Cal State Bakersfield swim and dive teams closed out its first regular season in The Big West with a pair of conference road duals.
  • The Big West added swim & dive as a sponsored sport just this year as the Roadrunners previously competed in the MPSF, the WAC, and Conference USA.
• The `Runners will now move into postseason competition with the Big West Championships set for Feb. 12-15, in Houston.
  • Bakersfield’s divers will tackle the CBU Diving Invite, Jan. 9-11, rounding out their regular season action.

CSUB vs. Cal Poly

• CSUB and Cal Poly faced off in San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Saturday, Jan. 4.
• The `Runner women edged their Mustang counterparts 154-138 as Bakersfield picked up its third-straight dual victory over Cal Poly.
• The Cal Poly men snuck past the `Runners with a 157-137 win.
• Per usual, the CSUB veterans led the way:
  • Senior Jessica Franco tallied four victories, winning the 200, 500, and 1000 freestyle events as well as leading the CSUB 400 free relay time to a win
  • Sophomore Josiane Hill also took four wins on Saturday, claiming first place in the 50 Free, 100 and 200 Back, and helping CSUB win the 200 medley relay
  • Danielle Albright joined Hill in the relay victory while adding individual wins in the 200 Breaststroke and 200 IM.
  • Junior Arthur Amaral Schneider joined the four-win club: 100, 200, and 500 Free, 400 free relay
  • Fellow junior Vili Sivec dominated for four victories as well: 100 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Fly, 400 free relay

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In their first meet of 2025, the Mustangs split results in a conference dual-meet against Cal State Bakersfield. The Mustang women (138 points) trailed the Roadrunners by 16 points, while the men captured a team win (157 points) on the back of Evan Yoo’s perfect day of three individual wins and one relay victory.

“Both the men and women swam well considering we just finished a week of hard training over the holidays. Everyone seems locked in and focused. I’m excited to see how they perform in our next few dual meets,” Co-interim swim head coach Kim Foster-Carlson said about today’s outcome.

The dives began at 11:00 am and took place long before swimming. Ava Lazovsky (237.38) and Shayna Gayer (234.83) earned the top two spots with respectable scores for the women’s 1-meter, while Justin Dolezal (271.65) was edged out by CSUB’s Dyson Modica. For the 3-meter, Lazovsky and Gayer flipped spots from the first dives as Gayer (260.63) took the win this time.

Kicking off the swimming day were the 200 Medley Relays, as the team of Sarah Jacobson, Melia Costa, Mikaela Gomez, and Rhian Neitzel placed second in the women’s event (1:48.51) and the Mustang men took the top two spots on their race with Drew Huston, Evan Yoo, Evan O’Connell, and Jonathan Butler (1:30.90) pacing the pack.

Kristin Der broke the minute mark of the 100 Back in placing second (59.62) with Gomez and Jacobson following closely behind. Unsurprisingly, Huston blew the men’s competition away (50.80) as freshman Sam Seybold (51.11) took second.

Cal Poly swept the 100 Breast races with Melia Costa (1:07.38) and Evan Yoo (55.04) picking up the victories. Cal Poly’s men captured the most points from the event with Alex Power and Jaxon Bruzgul earning second and third respectively during an all-Mustang podium.

Butler swam the 50 Free in under 21 seconds (20.71) to pace the event and capture a win. Finn Schlamp (21.48) and Nick Elliott (21.51) also picked up points in third and fourth.

Summer Cheng swam a decent 100 Free (54.90) while capturing second in the event and Jonathan Butler mirrored her second-place performance for the men (46.57).

Sam Seybold paced the 200 Back (1:52.07) while Cal Poly swept the entire top four of the event, Scott Iannaccone (1:54.63), Huston (1:54.93), and Lucas Meneghetti (1:58.03) following second-to-fourth.

Earning his second race win of the day, Yoo took the 200 Breast (1:59.87) by over seven seconds. Behind Yoo was Camilo Vargas who claimed second in the 200 Breast, also placing second in the 200 IM. For the women, Neitzel (2:24.91) was the fastest Mustang.

Gomez’s 100 Fly (57.91) not only earned her a race win but almost came somewhat close to cracking the program’s top-5 list.

Yoo made it a trio of wins during the final individual races of the day, taking the 100 IM (1:50.35) by over five seconds and further sealing a team win for the men. To round off the day overall, Cal Poly swept the 400 Free Relay with Olivia Sundgren, Gomez, Neitzel, and Taylor Lyon (3:40.96) for the women and the men’s team of Butler, Lucas Crother-Collado, Finn Schlamp, and Drew Huston (3:03.79).

The Mustangs now turn to their final home meet of the season as they host UC Santa Cruz for senior day next Friday.
