Coyotes, Jackrabbits Split Dual In Final Meet At Dakotadome

VERMILLION, S.D.  – South Dakota men’s and women’s swimming and diving team split its Summit League duals against rival South Dakota State on Saturday inside the DakotaDome Pool.

It was the end of an era for the Dome Pool, opening in November 1979 and hosting its final meet today as South Dakota State won the men’s dual 175-119 and South Dakota took the women’s 214-86.

Gabbie Ahrendt was a three-event individual winner while Emily Kahn and Taylor Buhr captured a pair of races as the women’s team claimed 15 of the 16 events contested in the dual.

Kahn and Jacob Carlson set pool and school records and the men’s 200 medley relay team (1:42.44) also set school and pool records that will be etched into the books forever.

Individual victories also came from Camilla Brogger-AndersenSara MayerMairead PowersKayla MiddaughTaylor Horan and Stella Fairbanks on the women’s side and Joaquin Contreras-FallicoJacob Carlson and Charlie Matthews twice for the men.

The Coyotes swept the two relays contested in the meet, the 200 medley and 200 free.

Ahrendt, a freshman, won the 200 free (2:07.74), 100 fly (1:04.29) and the 200 IM (2:23.85).

Kahn, a junior, established the pool and school mark in the 100 free in 57.66 while also winning the 50 free in 26.25.

Buhr, a sophomore, won both breaststroke races, winning the 100 in 1:14.41 and the 200 in 2:38.27.

Carlson, a senior, touched the wall first in the 100 fly in 55.98 seconds and also swam on both winning relays. He joined Adam FisherJack Berdahl and Zachary Kopp on the school and pool record 200 medley relay and came back to close the meet by teaming with Kopp, Fisher and Aidan Gantenbein to win the 200 free relay.

Brogger-Andersen, a sophomore, opened the individual portion of the meet with a win in the 800 freestyle in 9:23.33.

Mayer, a junior, claimed the 200 fly in 2:25.47, Powers, a junior, touched first in the 200 back in 2:20.66 and Horan, a freshman, won the 400 free in 4:36.76.

Middaugh and Fairbanks, a pair of seniors, claimed wins in the diving events as Middaugh scored 236.85 on the three-meter to edge Fairbanks who had 234.59. Fairbanks, turned the tables on the one-meter board with a 246.45 and Middaugh second with a 228.08.

The women’s foursome of Grace SchultzPhoebe Paarlberg, Mayer and Skyler Leverenz won the 200 medley relay in 1:59.55 while the quartet of Kahn, Mayer, Christina Spomer and Leverenz triumphed in the 200 free relay in 1:47.89.

Matthews, a freshman, swept the diving events in the men’s dual, posting a season best 249.45 on the three-meter board and scoring 217.65 on the one-meter board.

Contreras-Fallico, a freshman, won the 100 backstroke in 56.68 seconds.

The Coyotes close the dual meet season with a trip to Omaha on Friday for a 5 p.m. start.

VERMILLION — Emma Walz was the lone event winner for the South Dakota State women’s swimming and diving team in a 214-86 dual loss Saturday at in-state rival South Dakota.

With the loss, the Jackrabbits moved to 9-9 in head-to-head competition this season.

A senior from Fremont, Nebraska, Walz claimed the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 1 minute, 5.62 seconds, edging teammate Sianne Downes by .15 seconds. Lily Esmas was fifth for the Jackrabbits in 1:07.36.

Downes also was runner-up in the 200-meter backstroke, clocking in at 2:21.59. Kelsey Kocon placed third in 2:23.09 and Kaylin de Almeida took fourth in 2:24.31. Later in the meet, de Almeida contributed a second-place time of 2:26.96 in the 200 individual medley.

Freshman Gigi Hioki turned in a pair of top-three event finishes in the distance freestyle events, placing second in the 800 (9:36.99) and third in the 400 (4:41.01). Maven Moore tallied a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:47.02.

Hioki and Walz teamed with Kocon and Emma Bachelder to close out the meet with a runner-up effort in the 200 freestyle relay, clocking a time of 1:49.84.

The Jackrabbits return to competition Feb. 2-3 at the Coyote Invite. The two-day meet will be held at the Midco Aquatic Center in Sioux Falls.

VERMILLION — South Dakota State swimmers won 10 event titles and set three venue records to close out the dual season Saturday with a 175-119 victory over South Dakota at the DakotaDome Pool.

The Jackrabbits improved to 10-4 in head-to-head competition this season

Freshman Cody Vertin won three event titles for the second dual in a row, starting with a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 3.23 seconds. A Brookings native, Vertin added wins in the second half of the dual in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.49) and 200 individual medley (2:09.07). Vertin’s 200 breaststroke time also set a DakotaDome Pool record in what was the final scheduled competition in the facility’s history.

Sam Johnson also established a pool record in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 1:53.63 and added a second event title in the 100 freestyle by touching the wall first in 51.87 seconds.

Jack Ellison was another two-time winner for the Jackrabbits in the distance events, posting top times in both the 400 (4:08.06) and 800 (8:38.41) freestyle races.

Eric Anderson made it an SDSU sweep in the freestyle events by winning the 50-meter race in 23.18 seconds.

Denilson Cyprianos turned in the third and final pool-record performance by notching a winning time of 2:02.10 in the 200 back. Cyprianos also placed second in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.60.

Braxton McGrath rounded out the list of event winners for the Jackrabbits with a victory in the 200 butterfly. McGrath led an SDSU sweep of the top three spots in the event with a time of 2:06.63, followed by Austin Smith (2:09.01) and Bryan Wong (2:10.02).
