CHARLOTTE, N.C. – They didn’t need the win, but they weren’t in any mood to lose the race, either.
Having picked up some key wins down the stretch, Colorado State’s women’s swimming team built a margin against both Old Dominion and host Queens University, the hosts being the only true challenger. Even still, CSU coach Christopher Woodard watched the back half of his quad nail down strong split and come from behind to leave the East Coast with a pair of dual wins.
The Rams, who won eight of the 14 events, beat Queens 142-118, topping Old Dominion 208.5-51.5. The squad has now won five consecutive duals, and the two wins came on the longest trip for the team in quite some time and their first competition against both schools.
“I think when I’ve had teams that have struggled a little bit more, the tendency was to look for every obstacle along the way. This team just rolled with it,” Woodard said. “They were like, no problem. They breezed in and out of the airport, they handled the warmup and any restrictions along the way. They were not to be deterred.”
Especially the final quad. Woodard went to freshman Mia Axelman to lead off the 400-yard free group, followed by Lucy Matheson. The Rams trailed at the midpoint, but both Megan Hager and Lexie Trietley posted the only 50-second splits in the field, breezing to the victory in a time of 3:26.58.
It was the fastest time of the season on a day when a handful of Rams took advantage of being at sea level by posting personal bests. None more so than Hager and Trietley.
“Lexie and Hager … Hager just had a meet. She had the fastest last 50 split, going a 26.1,” Woodard said. “She just shut it down. It was amazing. The third and fourth leg, they just shut it down.”
Trietley won both the 50 and 100 freestyle in season-best times, her 50 time of 23.10 ranking second in the Mountain West this season, her 50.55 in the 100 the fastest to date. In that race, she led a 1-2 finish with Hager, who lowered her season best to 51.32.
Freshman Tess Whineray was the Rams’ other double winner on the day, touching first in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes, lowering her 200 time a touch.
Other wins came from Erin Dawson in the 200 free, Matheson in the 200 backstroke and Maya White in the 500 free.
There were a couple of races where the Rams were surprised by runner-up finishes, but Woodard felt they shook off every possible disappointment and found a way to bounce back. The team’s depth played a big part, with Axelman, Anika Johnson, Maisy Barbosa, Sydney VanOvermeiren, Claire Wright and Rylee O’Neil placing in multiple events.
“They haven’t been getting fazed by taking a loss, like the first relay,” Woodard said. “They were like, OK, let’s just come back and we’ll double up somewhere. They did, and they did not get fazed at any point by the swings at any point of the meet.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte men’s & women’s swimming program tacked on two more wins in the 2023 season, as each squad took victories against Old Dominion on Friday night. Colorado State claimed a win over the women’s team to finish off the tri-meet. Overall, the Royals claimed 19 event wins on the night.
“The women and men showed a lot of heart and many of them took it to the next level,” Associate Head Coach Nic Eriksson said. “Loved watching each of our Royals race. Looking forward, our team leadership is what’s going to carry this momentum into our mid-season championship in two weeks. Royals pride is forever.”
The Royals kicked the meet off with a victory as the men & the women took both wins in the 400-yard medley relays. The group of Maren Patterson, Abigail Zboran, Annika Huber, and Danielle Melilli completed with a 3:45.23 final time while the men comprised of Andreas Marz, Yannick Plasil, Noah Beladi, and Nien Levy completed with a 3:19.42. The women’s time currently sits as a new conference record, passing up Liberty’s time of 3:47.83 swam on Oct. 13.
Queens took their next win in the women’s 1000-yard free, as Sophia Lange swam a 10:20.61 — with second-place finisher Maya White of Colorado State finishing over five hundredths of a second behind Lange’s time.
Old Dominion and Colorado State would each snag a win in the next two events before Balazs Berecz took a triumph in the 200-yard free event with a time of 1:38.92.
Next, Caden Fritz would take his first individual win of the season in the 100-yard backstroke with a final time of 49.26, while Huber grabbed the winning time of 1:03.20 in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke and Noah Beladi took the win in the men’s breastroke event with a 56.28. Huber was also victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke event later in the meet, tallying a winning time of 2:17.83.
In the next event, Abigail Zboran of the Royals was just barely defeated in the women’s 200-yard fly by Lucy Matheson of the Rams who finished with a 2:02.63. Zboran bounced back later in the meet with two wins in the 100-yard fly with a 55.53 and in the 200 yard IM with a 2:03.30, a season-best and current ASUN-leading finish.
Other notable wins in the second stretch of the meet included Plasil’s win in the 100-yard fly (49.25) and 200-yard fly (1:50.11), Nien Levy’s first career win in the men’s 50-yard free (20.97), and Jablcnik Frantisek’s two victories in the 500-yard Free (4:34.41) and 200-yard IM (1:51.43).
Jonathan Henschel also picked up his first win of the season in the 100-yard Free with a time of 46.87, while Marz tabbed a 2:03.01 in the 200-yard breaststroke — claiming the first-place spot.
Capping off the meet, the Queens men (Daniel Meszaros, Levy, Berecz, and Henschel) took home the 400-yard freestyle relay event with a final time of 3:02.11.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Old Dominion Men’s Swimming team fell to Queens 196-66 on Friday and the Women’s team fell to Queens 202-58 and Colorado State 208.50-51.50.
In the men’s 400 medley relay, Gustaf Hansson, Bryce Mortimer, Jamie Cleaver and Ryan Lincicum placed third with a time of 3:25.08.
Yagiz Ari placed first in the men’s 1000 free with a time of 9:31.80 and Grey Bremer took third with a time of 9:42.09.
In the men’s 200 free, Cleaver took third with a time of 1:41.79.
Mary Dunworth took third place in the women’s 100 back with a time of 57.44.
Hansson took third in the men’s 100 back with a time of 50.77.
In the men’s 50 free, Cleaver took second with a time of 21.18.
Mortimer took third in the men’s 200 breast with a time of 2:06.98.
In the men’s 500 free, Ari took second with a time of 4:34.80 and Bremer took third with a time of 4:41.41.
Cleaver took second in the men’s 100 fly with a time of 49.49.
In the men’s 200 IM, Mortimer took second with a time of 1:55.11.
Old Dominion is back in action tomorrow to take on Davidson in Davidson, North Carolina.
