GOLDEN, Colo. – A dominant performance from start to finish, leading to a step up in the record books.
Colorado State’s women’s swimming and diving team officially won 10 of 12 events (posting a top time as an exhibition in another), setting eight natatorium records along the way in sweeping host Colorado School of Mines and New Mexico State on Saturday. The Rams beat the Miners 164-57, the Aggies 150-72. It marks 16 consecutive dual victories for the program, the second-longest run in school history.
Coming off a first meet at sea level and coming back and ramping up the yardage in workouts in the lead-up, head coach Christopher Woodard was excited to see his team string together strong races with times which remained close to the opening weekend.
“I was definitely pleasantly surprised. We knew they could swim well but coming off a reload week where we’re going up in intensity, volume and back up in the weight room, to be in many cases close to what we were doing at sea level was pretty impressive,” Woodard said. “We just know that we’ve heard a lot of them during the week, they’re sore, their stiff, they’re putting the weight back on and not able to hit some of the same sendoffs that they did in practice the week prior. Knowing they were battling that, to come in and still throw down was the impressive part.
“As tough as the back-end of a race can be at sea level, it’s a heck of a lot tougher when you’re a mile high. To have them swim tough in the back half of their races was really encouraging.”
Colorado State had 1-2-3 finishes in a trio of races (400-yard individual medley, 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle), and 1-2 in four others (400 medley relay, 1,000 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 200 breast).
Erin Dawson and Alexis Trietley won two events each as Trietley won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, while Dawson topped the field in both the 200 and 400 individual medleys. Both of them are off to strong starts, Trietley as a true freshman, Dawson as a sophomore bouncing back from an injury-plagued season.
“I think Erin has always enjoyed swimming, but obviously her health issues were a struggle last year and a tangible struggle,” Woodard said. “That’s going to make it a pretty miserable experience. Having her in there racing, every race she’s coming out with a smile on her face. I think she’s happy for the opportunity, but even happier she’s beyond her personal best.”
The Rams won the 400 medley relay and would have won the 400 free had the big lead built up before the final event not led Woodard to marking his teams as exhibition. Maya White and Emily Chorpening took the top two spots in the 1,000 free; Anika Johnson won the 200 free, with Megan Hager and Hannah Sykes also in the top five; and Amanda Hoffman took the 200 fly in front of teammates Sykes and Kendra Preski. Woodard was very impressed with the final two wins of the day, Lucy Matheson won the 200 back with Liza Lunina right behind her, followed by a win from Katie McClelland in the 200 breast, with Emma Breslin second.
More points where piled up with top-five finishes produced by Ashlyn Hembree, Delaney Engel, Azalea Shepherd, Leigha O’Connor and Olivia LeBlanc. There was no diving at the meet.
The pool records came in the 400 medley and 400 free relays, both individual medleys, the 50 and 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly and the 100 backstroke from Lucy Matheson’s lead leg of the 400 medley relay.
The Rams return back to action Oct. 28 with a road trip to Denver.

BOULDER, Colo. – For the second time in as many days, the Aggies took to the pool for competition in The Centennial State. Today’s swim-only meet consisted of a triangular against the host Colorado School of Mines and Colorado State.
The Aggies came out on top in the head-to-head against the Colorado School of Mines, 139-83, however, NM State was topped by Colorado State, 150-72, in their matchup.
SWIMMING
- The highlight of the day came in the day’s final event as the team of Aimee Burton, Naomi Slee, Elizabeth Cervantes-Vanderlugt and Lindsay Puhalski combined to set a new pool record – reaching the wall in 3:33.79.
- Early on, a pair of Aggies impressed in the 200 individual medley as Lindsay Puhalski finished second in the event with a time of 2:11.01 while Faye McDonagh joined Puhalski on the podium with a time of 2:12.75 to finish third.
- Naomi Slee also finished strong in the ensuing event, claiming second in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.18.
- The Aggies’ third second-place finisher was Aimee Burton who came in as the runner-up in the 50 free (25.06)
- Perhaps the most exciting finish of the day involving an Aggie came in the 500 free as Naomi Slee out-touched Colorado State’s Olivia Leblanc to finish first in the distance event. Slee would reach the wall at 5:10.64 – just four-one-hundredths of a second faster than her counterpart.

“Today was a great experience for our young team despite the loss. Traveling up here for back-to-back duals is always a huge challenge and gives us a great lesson in resilience. They came together as a team and had some better results towards the end of the meet.
“The last relay today was a great sign that we’re on track to do something special at the end of the year. They’re buying into the process, and we’ve got to keep learning and working hard towards success at the end of the season.”

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Women’s Swimming team finished off its opening weekend of the 2022-23 season by hosting the Mines Triangular at the Mines Natatorium.
Colorado State and New Mexico State, both NCAA Division I programs, joined the Orediggers late Saturday morning and stayed into the afternoon. After the waves settled, CSU had won its dual with NMSU, 150-72, while also winning against Mines, 164-57. The Orediggers racked up 83 points against the Aggies who notched 139 points of their own. Additionally, seven pool records fell with the Rams taking down the previous #1 times in the 400-medley relay, 200-IM, 50-free, 400-IM, 200-fly, 100-free, and 200-breast while New Mexico State broke the natatorium record in the 400-freestyle relay.
While Mines could have been sluggish after facing off against Air Force and Nebraska-Omaha less than 24 hours before, the Orediggers came out strong and provided multiple strong performances. The first highlight came in the very first event as Mines’ 400-medley relay of Emilia Jedryka, Cameryn Schmidt, Annie Osmun, and Jorie Selig out-touched New Mexico State with a time of 3:57.46 to take second. That started the meet and the Orediggers ended the meet in similar fashion thanks to Osmun, Maggie Wells, Selig and Jedryka edging NMSU for second in the 400-freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.53.
In between the outstanding relay performances, were several individual flashes. First was Meghan Slowey. Just over 12 hours after winning the 1000-free at the Air Force Triangular, Slowey came back and swam even faster in the second event of the day. She touched in 10:59.88 which was good enough for #3 and improved her early season best from 11:00.00. Slowey also appeared in the 200-free, 500-free, and as part of Mines’ second 400-freestyle relay.
Another gritty performer was Isabella Bono. On Friday night she raced in the 1000-free, 400-IM, and the 500-free. Early Saturday afternoon, the sophomore knocked out a second 400-IM in 4:51.91 with a second 500-free in 5:41.05. Her 400-IM time on Saturday marked a seven-second improvement and she also appeared in the 200-fly and as part of the second 400-freestyle relay.
Rounding it out was Jedryka, who not only came up big on both relays, but also posted an impressive 200-back. Her time of 2:09.86 helped her touch #3 in a field of 11 swimmers including eight DI competitors. Jedryka also managed managed to tie with teammate Olivia Kisow in the 200-free with identical times of 2:01.29.
The next action for Mines’ men and women both will be at Adams State on Oct. 28-29. A full preview will be released at www.minesathletics.com the week leading up to the event.
