Colorado Mesa Leads After Opening Day Of Rocky Mountain Championships

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have concluded day one of the RMAC Championships at the El Pomar Natatorium on the campus of Colorado Mesa.

The meet started with prelims in the men’s and women’s 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and women’s 3-meter dive before finals took center stage in the afternoon session.

1,000-Yard Freestyle
For the second straight year, Mia Wood of Colorado School of Mines was crowned the women’s individual champion. Wood took the lead from the start and never looked back finishing with a time of 10:06.14 which was a NCAA “A” standard.
On the men’s side, Colorado Mesa teammates Torsten Rau and Logan Ellis battled it out until the final stretch as Rau finished two seconds ahead to take the victory with a time of 9:31.28.

200-Yard Individual Medley
Freshman, Davy Brown did not let her inexperience at the Championships to get in the way as she touched the timing pad first with an overall time of 2:05.50.
It was a Colorado Mesa finish as the Mavericks took positions 1-5. Matthe Barrett was claimed the individual champion as he finished in 1:50.21 which was .46 seconds ahead of Jake Simmons.
In the prelims, Bergen Davis broke his own Oklahoma Christian school record with a time of 1:52.12.

50-Yard Freestyle
In the always exciting sprint, freshman Bret Condgon of Colorado Mesa was the first to finish in the women’s race with a time of 23.64.
Jamie McGarrigle set an Oklahoma Christian school record with a second-place finish in a time of 24.01. She also became the first women’s Eagles swimmer to earn All-RMAC honors.
Another freshman stepped up big in their first Championship as Oklahoma Baptist’s Estevao Hornos touched the pad just .30 seconds ahead of fellow freshman teammate Daniel Santos with a time of 20.29.

Women’s 3-Meter Dive
Reclaiming her title for an impressive third year in a row was Brittany Dixon of Colorado Mesa with an NCAA “A” standard score of 439.60. Fellow teammate Jolynn Harris also hit an “A” standard to finish second with a total of 428.15 points.

200-Yard Medley Relay
Colorado Mesa women’s relay team of Sarah Fillerup, Sam White, Noel Scott and Bret Congdon dipped just under their seed time finishing first with a time of 1:43.65.
The Mavericks swept the event as the men’s squad of Lane Austin, Mahmoud Elgayar, Pedro Terres Illescas and Felipe D’Orsi finished in a time of 1:28.31.
