CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State improved to 3-2 on the year after toppling Calvin 221-79 on Senior Day.
Prior to the start of the meet, the Vikings recognized nine seniors: Giovanna Cappabianca, Brooke Eichel, Kellsie Krisch, Mackenzie Lipnick, Amanda Paxson, Ana Sofia Sousa, Reagan St. Clair, Madison Taker, and Holly White.
Eichel won both diving events with a score of 251.48 in 3M and 265.65 in 1M. Ellie Seiter was the runner-up in both with a score of 249.30 in 3M and 253.95 in 1M.
Grace Chelf won the 50-yard freestyle (23.05) and 100-yard freestyle (50.72).
Eva Smith was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke (57.05) and 200-yard backstroke (2:02.62).
Bella Caraballo won both distance events: 1000-yard freestyle (10:21.14) and 500-yard freestyle (5:03.97).
Cappabianca claimed the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.57) and 200-yard IM (2:07.90).
Thee 100-yard breaststroke went to Krisch (1:05.17) and the 200-yard butterfly to Audrey Butcher (2:05.15).
The Vikings capped off the evening with a win in the 400-yard freestyle as Palmer, Chelf, Kaelah Baccus, and Sousa finished in 3:27.67.
Both teams will head to St. Bonaventure for a dual meet on Friday, January 17 followed by a three-team meet on Saturday in Pittsburgh against George Mason and Duquesne.

Prior to the start of the meet, the Vikings recognized five seniors: Andrew Arslanian, Connor Green, Paddy Johnston, Josh Merchbaker, and Jackson Nester.
James Wolf won 3M after putting up a score of 293.33 and 1M with a tally of 279.30.
Nester was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.81), 200-yard backstroke (1:50.12), and 200-yard IM (1:49.20).
Johnston won the 50-yard freestyle (20.28) and 100-yard freestyle (45.45).
Ahmad Abdalhak claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (55.67) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.84).
In the distance events, Brock Wallace won the 1000-yard freestyle (9:43.32) and Noah Greer won the 5000-yard freestyle (4:42.84).
The Vikings ended the evening with a win in the 400-yard freestyle as Joe Parkhurst, Cameron Craft, Daniel Lyngaas, and Johnston finished in 3:02.86.
Both teams will head to St. Bonaventure for a dual meet on Friday, January 17 followed by a three-team meet on Saturday in Pittsburgh against George Mason and Duquesne.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Today the Calvin women’s swim and dive team hopped in the pool for their first meet of the new year against Cleveland State. Competing against Division I competition, the Knights posted a team score of 79 points while Cleveland State finished with 221 points.
Calvin kicked things off nicely when Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville), Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School), Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central), and Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) took first place in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:45.04.
Second relay team Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South), Gracie Ganger (Tipp City, Oh./Tippecanoe), Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison), and Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) finished with a time of 1:49.62 in fourth place.
Freshman Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette Twp.) made her first appearance of the night when she competed in the 1000 freestyle where she took second with a time of 10:27.47. Later, she posted a time of 5:08.01 in the 500 freestyle.
In the 200 freestyle Merkel claimed the top spot when she finished at 1:53.67. She also competed in the 200 backstroke later in the evening where she took second place with a time of 2:02.67.
McNearney took second place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.80 while sophomore Katie Phippen (Macomb, Ill./Calvary Baptist) was close behind in fourth place at 1:05.97. Bajwa was Calvin’s top finisher in the 100 breaststroke when she finished at 1:06.94 in fourth place.
In the 200 butterfly Farrell took fifth place with a time of 2:14.60 and later took second place in the 100 butterfly at 56.13.
Sonday nabbed fourth place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.39 while Ganger (2:30.08) and Eloise Harrison (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) (2:34.93) took third and fourth place in the 200 breaststroke, respectively.
In the 50 freestyle Sonday finished in fourth at 24.11 while Bengelink finished in sixth at 24.75.
On the diving board, senior Kiah Heminghous (Midland, Mich./Midland) finished the one-meter competition in fifth place after posting a score of 181.20.
Calvin closed out their night on a high note when Farrell, Bengelink, Merkel, and Sonday took second place in the 400-freestyle relay.
COACHES COMMENT: “We looked good against Division I competition tonight,” said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. “We had some nice wins and some strong performances coming off a week of training in Florida. We have a really big day of competition ahead of us tomorrow and we are looking forward to the opportunity.”
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Grandville, Ohio to take on Denison and Carnegie Mellon at 1PM. Denison is ranked fifth in Division III while Calvin is ranked 15th and Carnegie Mellon 16th.
CLEVELAND, OH – The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team opened second semester competition with a trip to Division I Cleveland State University Friday afternoon. The Knights were defeated in the dual meet 192-102 but had several strong performances in the meet.
Senior Will Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) took second place on both the one-meter (263.25) and three-meter (232.80) diving boards.
Senior David Bajwa (Bethesda./The Heights School) cruised to a win in the 100 backstroke (50.05) while placing second in the 200 backstroke (1:53.32). Junior Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Oh./St. John’s Jesuit) was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:56.62).
In the 100 butterfly, senior Logan Campbell (Yorkville, Il./Yorkville HS) took home a win (48.97) while freshman Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Oh./Reynoldsburg HS) was fourth (51.33). Campbell added a third place swim in the 100 backstroke (51.21).
Junior Timothy Hays (Arlington, Il./Mt. Prospect HS) won the 200 butterfly (1:51.52) while placing second in the 200 IM (1:50.75).
Junior Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove South HS) was second in the 200 freestyle (1:40.45) and 100 freestyle (45.65). Senior Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) was second in the 50 freestyle (20.94) while graduate student Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows Il.//Rolling Meadows HS) took fifth (21.12). Molin also placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.83).
Junior Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Hone School) was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.04) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (56.24).
Calvin went 2-3 in the 500 freestyle with sophomore Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) placing second (4:48.30) and sophomore Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Il./Normal HS) taking third (4:48.76). Halberg was also fourth in the 1000 freestyle (9:58.41). Molin, Seidelman and Platt placed second in a time of 3:03.28.

NEXT UP: The Knights will now turn their attention to a triangular dual meet at Denison University that will also include Carnegie Mellon. All three teams are nationally-ranked in Division III with Denison ranked second, Carnegie Mellon ranked eighth and Calvin ranked ninth. The competition is slated to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Granville, Ohio.
