CCSU Student Arrested for Spying on Women’s Swimmers in Locker Room

A student at Central Connecticut State University has been arrested and charged with voyeurism and criminal trespassing after police allege that he watched two members of the women’s swim team shower in locker rooms on campus.

According to CCSU police, on January 17, two members of the school’s women’s swim team noticed 25-year-old Matthew Nieves watching them shower. One of the women noticed him looking through a small opening in the door to the showers.

The police report says she screamed and told her coach, who then searched the area and took photos of a man outside of Kaiser Hall, which matched the athlete’s description of the man watching her in the shower.

An investigation, including reviewing surveillance videos, identified Nieves as the man in the locker room. He told police that he got lost and accidentally walked into the locker room.

Police say that surveillance video didn’t indicate the behaviors of someone who was lost, and that the doors leading into the locker room were clearly labeled. According to the arrest warrant for Nieves, one of the doors was labeled “Women’s Varsity Suite.”

From the arrest warrant:

Due to the lockers and bathroom area, along with the door clearly labeled ‘Women’s’ leading to this area, it would be reasonable to believe that any lay person would understand that they are not only in a locker room, but the women’s locker room.

Nieves is a CCSU student who lives on campus.

In Connecticut, criminal trespass in the 3rd degree is a class C misdemeanor, which carries up to 3 months in jail and a $500 fine. Voyeurism in so-called “Pepping Toms” cases is classified as disorderly conduct when the alleged victims are not recorded. This is also class C misdemeanor with similar sentencing maximums.

Central Connecticut State is an NCAA Division I team located in New Britain, Connecticut.
