RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University hosted the University of Pacific at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon as the Lancer men and women claimed victory over the Tigers. The men dominated 152-102, while the women also won convincingly with a score of 147-114.
This meet counted only swimming events in the scores as Pacific no longer sponsors a diving team, but the Lancers still won going away without the aid of their top-tier divers. Each side competed in 15 events, with the Lancer men claiming first place in 12 races while the women claimed the top spot in eight.
Mark Kovacsics, Robert Moseley, Jonathan Reiter, and Remi Fabiani all won a pair of individual races on the day. At the same time, Moseley and Fabini each contributed to two relay wins and Reiter assisted with one relay victory.
Lynn Henke led the way on the women’s side, winning both of her individual events and assisting with one of the women’s two relay wins. Mia Maspers also claimed an individual win and contributed to both of the Lancer women’s relay victories.
Even though school will be out of session for Christmas Break, the swim and dive teams will stay busy. The swim crew will head out the Las Vegas to partake in the UNLV Invite from Dec. 17-19, while the diving side will host the annual Lancer Diving Invite on Dec. 16-17.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Pacific men’s (2-3) and women’s (3-5) swim teams competed hard at California Baptist Saturday.
The Tigers came up short against the Lancers, scoring 102-152 on the men’s side and 114-147 on the women’s side.
“We took advantage of some race opportunities but are still learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. We’re coming off our mid-season meet and physically don’t feel the best,” said Head Coach Katelyne Herrington. “We need to continue to get better with racing when we don’t feel great. CBU was the better team today and are hoping for a better dual next year.”
The men’s team won 4 races, including a sweep in the 100 fly, with sophomore Mitchell Hopper placing first, sophomore Leland Baltazar placing second and senior Christian Schroeder placing third.
Junior Alex Kurotori took the top spot in the 200 individual medley and Baltazar finished first in the 50 free.
There was a stellar performance in the 200 relay, where Hopper, Baltazar, Kurotori and junior Aidan Vollmar all contributed to a first-place finish to lead the Tigers.
We also saw a few runner-ups on the day, including, Kurotori in the 100 back, freshman Jack Springer in the 200 back and freshman Bridger Sink in the 200 breast.
The women’s team won 6 races, led by triple-winner junior Caitlin Tan. She placed first in the 200 fly, 100 fly and 200 individual medley.
In the 1000 free and 200 free, sophomore Ellie Macphail and freshman Diana Chan each took the top spot, respectively.
Sophomore Kelly Kermoian finished first in the 200 back, with Chan coming in right behind with a second-place showing.
The 200 medley relay was a strong outing, with sophomore Noemi Melendez, sophomore Paige Sondgeroth, freshman Annelise Thomas and sophomore Alexia Ferguson coming in second.
Sondgeroth also was runner-up in both the 100 and 200 breast competitions.
A few more second-place finishes include freshman Deanna Brazil in the 100 back, Ferguson in the 100 free and sophomore Jaydn Phillips in the 500 free.
“It was good to see some swimmers not put as much pressure on themselves today, turning off the mind and just racing. Those are the ones that stood out the most,” said Herrington. “Each meet it’s important to look at how we can get better the next time we step up to the blocks. I’m excited to get back into some training.”
The men’s team will next face Stanford in Palo Alto on January 13, while the women’s team will be back in action at home against Cal Poly on January 14.
