Carson Foster Was Surprised by Matt Sates Change Up Strategy in 200 IM Final

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Carson Foster equaled his placing in the 200 IM from last year’s SC World champs, this time touching behind Matt Sates of South Africa. Foster noted that while Sates usually has a strong first and last 50, it seemed like tonight he really pushed the backstroke and extended his lead over the field into the breast and free legs.

How can he be surprised? The 200 is not a marathon. That distance requires sprint upon sprint. Strategy is out the window and closers are suckers. The problem is that this event has been so pathetic post Phelps and Lochte there’s been too much thinking going on instead of stringing one ferocious leg onto another. Fortunately the individual medleys are finally waking up on both the men’s side and women’s side.
