BERKELEY – Junior McKenna Stone was a triple-winner and the California women’s swimming & diving team swept the top three spots in three different events in a 181.5-110.5 victory over Arizona in Pac-12 dual meet action Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Stone took the 50-yard freestyle (22.50) and the 100 butterfly (52.08) while also helping the Golden Bears win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.41. Graduate Student Mia Motekaitis and junior Leah Polonsky each captured two individual events as Cal improved to 4-0 in conference dual meets this season.
The Bears went 1-2-3 in the 100 free, 200 free and 100 breast. Senior Emily Gantriis won the 100 free in a time of 49.11 and placed second in the 200 free (1:47.02) behind teammate Rachel Klinker. Junior Morgan Brophy placed second in both freestyle sprint events and contributed to Cal’s victory in the 200 medley relay.
Motekaitis, an All-American last season in the 500 freestyle, won the event Friday with a time of 4:43.16. She also captured the 100 backstroke (53.14).
Polonsky won the 1,000 free (9:47.50) and 100 back (53.14) to improve to 10-1 in individual dual meet events this season.
Freshman Ariana Drake took second place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
The Bears return to their home pool Saturday to host Arizona State in another Pac-12 dual meet.
BERKELEY – Heavy rains in the Bay Area did not stop the third-ranked California men’s swimming & diving team from capturing its first win of the 2024 year. The Golden Bears soundly defeated Arizona by a final score of 183-110 on Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Cal won 12 events and swept four. Destin Lasco was victorious in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Other winners on the day were Robin Hanson (50 free), Keaton Jones (500 free), Trent Frandson (1000 free), Bjorn Seeliger (100 backstroke), Colby Mefford (200 back), Sean Swift (100 breaststroke), Jacob Soderlund (200 breast), Gabriel Jett (200 butterfly), and Joshua Thai was victorious in the 1-meter dive.
The top race of the afternoon was in the 200 freestyle. Lasco came from behind to out-touch Jack Alexy for first with a season-best time of 1:32.68. Alexy also recorded a season-best time, finishing 1:32.74 – both of those times were good enough for NCAA B qualifying marks.
Seeliger’s finished the 100 back with a time of 44.99 – two tenths off an NCAA A qualifying mark – and a season-best time. Soderlund’s time in the 200 breast was 1:55.36, a season-best time for him and improves his NCAA B qualifying time. Forrest Fraizer raced as an exhibition in the 100 breast, his time of 53.41 was a season-best.
In the 1-meter dive, Thai finished with 325.65. Geoffrey Vavitsas finished second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 325.88.
Cal returns to action tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. PT when the Bears host Arizona State. Saturday’s meet will be streamed on the Cal Live Stream, fans can also follow live results via Meet Mobile.

BERKELEY, Calif. – Swimming and Diving are headed to Stanford after taking a loss today against California. The Cats fell 181.50-11.50 on the women’s side and 181-110 on the men’s side.
Despite their loss, Arizona put up a trying fight against Cal, the reigning national champions, this afternoon. The Cats dominated on the diving side, with Brooke Earley taking first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, and Gage DuBois taking first in the 3-meter. The Wildcats came out with two first place wins from Julia Heimstead and Ralph Daleiden and several top three finishes.
