SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team started its season with a victory over Fairfield at Chace Pool, finishing with a final score of 167-133. This was the first time Fairfield competed at Bryant in over ten years, creating a lively atmosphere for the home team’s opening meet.

Notes and Notables:

  • Marcella Figueroa anchored both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay, leading the Bulldogs to a victory in the 400 free relay. She also claimed first place in the 50 free with a time of 24.34.
  • Jill CarlineAddison Abreu and Charlee LeGallais joined Figueroa to close out the 400 free relay victory.
  • Amanda Witkus took first place in the 200 fly and finished second in the 100 fly in her first meet as a Bulldog.
  • Ruby Tonelli secured a win in the 100 fly and placed second in the 200 fly.
  • Jacqui Fox placed second in both the 100 back and 200 back.
  • Makayla Pearce dominated the long-distance events, taking first in both the 1000 free (10:36.78) and 500 free (5:15.32).
  • Jill Carline grabbed a victory in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.96.
  • Megan Beasley contributed to the Bulldogs’ success by winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
  • Dalena Tran placed second in the 3 meter.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men’s swimming and diving team kicked off the season with a strong victory over Fairfield, securing a final score of 152-148 at Chace Pool. This meet marked the first time the Bulldogs hosted Fairfield in over a decade, getting a hyped crowd for the meet.

Friday’s meet featured a raucous environment as nearly 500 spectators took in the opening meet of the year. Bryant will host its second meet of the year on November 2.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams were swept by Bryant University on Friday night. The men’s team was edged by three points with Bryant scoring a 152-148 victory while the women fell by a 167-133 count.

The Stags saw ten different swimmers take a first-place finish during the event with Erini Pappas securing three individual victories and Ed Hunt touching the wall first in two individual races. Pappas started the evening with the top spot in the 100 back, registering a time of 58.44. She followed up with wins in the 200 back (2:07.05) and the 200 IM (2:09.87) Hunt also took first place in the 200 IM by completing the distance in 1:56.49. Earlier in the meet, Hunt owned the best time in the 200 fly (1:54.70).

The men and women each had a win in the relays with the women taking the 200 medley relay by clocking in 1:47.12 behind the efforts of Erini PappasTone Sandsjoe, Lara Kisakol, and Olivia Thompson. Tim Regan, Aidan Schnapf, Cormac Rouse, and Joseph Stewart combined for a time of 3:08.28 to take first in the 400 free relay.

Fairfield also put together first-second placements in multiple events beginning with the 200 free which was taken by Tim Regan (1:43.08) followed by Aidan Schnapf (1:44.78). Colin Ko and Jeffrey Vlass accomplished the same task in the 100 breast, finishing in 59.08 and 59.79 respectively. Jack Behm and Schnapf grabbed the top two spots in the 200 back, registering time of 1:54.95 and 1:54.97.

The team also placed first place in five other events that included Oliver McLaughlin (100 back – 52.68), Tone Sandsjoe (100 breast – 1:05.41), Olivia Thompson (100 free – 54.39), Alison Sposili (200 breast – 2:24.29), and Jeffrey Vlass (200 breast – 2:10.46).

The Stags captured first and second in the 200 IM on both sides, beginning with Pappas and Alison Sposili who posted time of 2:09.87 and 2:12.04.  For the men’s team, Ed Hunt and Chris Dauser completed the sweep for Fairfield, completing the event in 1:56.49 and 1:59.61.

In the diving competition, Lillian Tonole and Elizabeth Beaulieu earned second and third respectively in the 1-meter event, scoring 221.40 and 209.63 points through their six dives. The duo also represented the Stags in the 3-meter with Tonole taking third place (217.35) and Beaulieu holding down fourth place (184.28).

Three divers went to the board for the men’s team highlighted by Andrew Cataldo’s second-place performance in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. He scored 225.75 points in the 3-meter followed by 240.60 in the 1-meter. Noah Duncan secured third place in both events with his scores of 203.48 in the 3-meter and 187.13 in the 1-meter. Tyler Robie garnered fourth place in the 3-meter with 185.33 points and took the fifth slot in the 1-meter with 170.78 points.

The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will resume their schedule next Saturday, October 19 when they host Providence College at the RecPlex Pool. The meet begins at 1 pm.
