Men:

The Brown men’s swimming & diving team defeated Cornell, 184-99, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in its last dual meet of the season. Prior to the start of the meet, Brown seniors Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif.), Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.), Will LaCosta (Gladstone, N.J.), Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.), Kevin Mertz (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) were honored.

“We are excited to deliver a dual meet win on senior day,” said head coach Chris Ip. “Our seniors are the core of the program and when they decide to show up the team follows.”

The 200 medley relay team of sophomore William Steele (Katy, Texas), sophomore Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.), Klotz and freshman Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) started the meet off with a big win to set the tone, finishing in 1:30.21.

Following the relay, junior Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) swam to a first place finish in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:32.62.

The Bears next took the top-four spots in the 200 freestyle. Led by sophomore Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) (1:40.53), Brown swept the event with Mertz (1:40.80), freshman Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) (1:41.92) and freshman Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) (1:42.35) rounding out places 2-3-4.

The team continued the strong performances with a 1-2 finish in the 100 backstroke with Johnston (50.54) edging out sophomore Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) (50.66) to snag the victory for the Bears.

Lohman and Jin took second (56.62) and fourth (56.97), respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.

The 200 butterfly was won by junior Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.) (1:50.04). LaCosta swam to a lifetime-best performance of 1:51.11, good enough for 15th all-time in program history and third overall in the meet. W. Steele followed LaCosta in fourth with a 1:52.17.

Cline took wins in the 50 (20.32) and 100 freestyle (45.28). Klotz (20.57) and Nee (20.74) took second and fourth in the 50. Stephens followed Cline in the 100 with a 45.91 to finish second.

Bruno took 1-2 in the 1M board with Schlafer (308.25) ahead of junior Bryce Campanelli (Palmyra, Va.) (257.55). Campanelli came back to win the 3M with a score of 282.23. Freshman William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) (271.43) edged out Schlafer (270.60) to lead the Bears to a 1-2-3 sweep on the 3M.

Brown swept the 200 backstroke with freshman Coley Sullivan Louisville, Ky.) (1:50.99), Johnston (1:51.21) and Brown (1:52.29).

Lohman took third in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:05.51.

Hollowsky swam to a second place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:37.92.

In the 100 butterfly, the Bears were led by W. Steele who won the event in 49.16. LaCosta was just .01 of a second behind Steele with a 49.17, a lifetime best. Rounding out the event for Brown was freshman Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) (49.96, 4th) and Klotz (50.18, 5th).

Springman (1:53.25) recorded his second victory of the day in the 200 IM. Sung took third (1:53.77) just .13 away from second place in the event. Sullivan and Lohman took fourth and fifth for the Bears.

In the final swimming event of the day, the Bears won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:02.20. The team of Cline, sophomore Charles Steele (Katy, Texas), Stephens and Smilenov won by over a second. The Brown relay of Klotz, Brown, Hollowsky and Nee placed third.

“We now have to take our dual meet win and transfer this momentum into a successful Ivy League Championships performance,” said Ip. “The staff is looking forward to our final training cycle to fine tune the team for peak performances at the Ivy Championships.”

The Bears will next compete in the Ivy League Championships, hosted by Harvard at Blodgett Pool, on Wednesday, Feb. 22 through Saturday, Feb. 25.

Women:

The Brown women’s swimming & diving team defeated Cornell, 200-100, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in its last dual meet of the season. Prior to the start of the meet, Brown seniors Molly Gelb (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Katie Roach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Sydney Tan (Winnetka, Ill.), Caroline Vexler (Moreland Hills, Ohio), Elly Vitek (Western Springs, Ill.) and Emma Wyke (Columbus, Ind.) were honored.

The 200 medley relay team of junior Jenna Zagoren (Cherry Hill, N.J.), junior Ally Donahue (Tampa, Fla.), Vexler and freshman Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) started the Bears off with a first place finish in 1:44.07. The B team of freshman Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.), Roach, sophomore Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) and sophomore Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) took second in 1:46.41.

Next, sophomore Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) claimed second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:21.96 with freshman Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) behind in third (10:21.67).

Vitek won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.11 while junior Sarah Cronin (Westfield, N.J.) (1:53.24), Gilchrist (1:53.87) and sophomore Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) (1:54.13) went 3-4-5.

In the 100 backstroke, freshman Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) took the top spot in 56.73 while Wyke placed third in 57.86. Welch also later won the 200 backstroke (2:02.49). Wyke (2:05.21) and freshman Zoe Phillips (Salt Lake City, Utah) (2:05.28) went 3-4 in the 200.

Donahue won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.91. Roach (1:05.54) and sophomore Tiffany Zhao (Beaverton, Ore.) (1:06.19) finished in third and fourth, respectively. Roach took first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.52. Donahue placed second in 2:24.75.

The Bears took the top three sports in the 200 butterfly with Vexler winning the event in 2:03.19. Freshman Jessie Blake-West (Belmont, Mass.) finished second in 2:04.02 and Wittmer came in third (2:04.04). Vexler also won the 100 butterfly in 55.94. Wittmer (56.28) and Blake-West (56.95) flip flopped, this time finishing in second and third, respectively.

Cross and Salesky went 2-3 in the 50 freestyle with times of 23.72 and 24.01, respectively.

In diving, freshman Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) won the 3M with a mark of 254.10. Gelb took fourth with 230.85. Gelb came back to win the 1M, scoring a 253.35. Zitkovsky claimed third (236.10).

Cross won the 100 freestyle in 51.18 with Salesky in third (51.93) and Cronin in fourth (52.55).

Prendella won the 500 freestyle in 5:00.12 while Armitage (5:03.93) and sophomore Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) (5:04.79) went 4-5.

Phillips placed second in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:26.59. Roach came in fourth (4:34.66).

To close the meet, Salesky, Cronin, Prendella and Cross won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.64. The B team of Welch, Wittmer, Blake-West and Vitek came in second with a time of 3:27.55.

The Bears will next compete in the Ivy League Championships, hosted by Brown at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center, on Wednesday, Feb. 15 through Saturday, Feb. 18.
