Brayden Capen Becomes #14 15-16 Boys All-Time With 2:00.26 200 Back On Day 1 Of NCSA Prelims

2024 NCSA SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Highlighting the first morning of competition in Indianapolis was 15 year old Brayden Capen of Academy Bullets. The 15 year old swam to a lifetime best 2:00.26 in the 200 back which is the #14 swim all-time in the 15-16 age group.

Capen’s old lifetime best stood at a 2:00.34 that he swam at this meet a year ago. That swim made him the #2 13-14 all-time sitting only behind Keaton Jones as Jones swam a 2:00.28 back in 2019. Jones notably made the US Olympic team in the 200 back this summer. Capen is the top seed for tonight and will have another chance to move up the ranks. Last summer, he dropped two seconds from prelims to finals and dipping under the 2:00 mark tonight would be huge.

Also highlighting the morning was Charlotte Crush of Lakeside Swim Team who will swim as the top seed tonight in both the 200 back (2:10.90) and 50 fly (27.33). Crush won both events a year ago. She already was faster this morning in the 200 back than she was at last month’s US Trials as she swam a 2:12.17 for 20th then. Her time in prelims today would have earned her a spot in semifinals.

Annam Olasewere led the way in prelims of the girls 100 free with a 56.58, just over half a second off her best time of a 55.74 that she swam at 2023 US Summer Nationals. Rebecca Rentz clocked a best time of a 56.71 for 2nd in the 100 free this morning, faster than her old best time of a 56.88.

Michigan commit Alex Thiesing swam to a 51.15 this morning in the boys 100 free, just 0.01 ahead of Devin Dilger who swam a 51.16. Nathaniel Hohm swam a 51.19 for 3rd this morning while Jake Wang was 4th in a 51.20 so tonight’s final looks to be a good one.

15 year old Brady Campbell led the boys 50 fly with a 24.38, 0.03 off his best time that he swam in May. Dilger, a Florida commit, swam a 24.54 for 2nd this morning.

I saw Capen in the water and thought, that’s the kid from trials with the wacky loopy back stroke.
