BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Tanner Barton chapter in BGSU swim & dive history could not have started off on any more of a high note, as the Falcons bested host Canisius (226-71), Siena (234-63) and Rochester (236-62) for a clean sweep in the season-opening quad meet at Erie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.
Of the 16 individual and relay events, BGSU came away victorious in all but one of them.
The meet started off with a bang in the 200-medley relay, as Emily McNicol, Joanna Robertson, Elayna Krupp and Riley McNichols contributed to a first-place time of 1:46.46.
“They thrived during the first event, and our team really kept building off that momentum,” Barton said.
That drive helped propel Lourdes Manderfield (10:45.90) and Livia Castro (10:49.25) go 1-2 in the 1,000 freestyle and was followed up by first and third place finishes from Taylor Devorace (1:55.85) and Abby Toepfer (1:56.98) in the 200 freestyle, McNicol (56.49) and Alexandra Johnson (1:00.25) in the 100 backstroke and Grace Perlberg (1:06.98) and Robertson (1:07.14) in the 100 breaststroke.
Fabiana D’Ambrogio (2:07.35) and Grace Bodrock (2:10.34) took gold and silver, respectfully, in the 200 butterfly while later Karina Solera (56.18) won the 100 butterfly followed by D’Ambrogio (58.71), Bodrock (58.81) and Krupp (59.31).
BGSU flashed its depth in the freestyle events, as they took the top four spots in the 50-yard race and snagged the top three in the 100-yard event. Becdach (24.00) led the charge in the 50, followed by McNichols (24.35), Berrow (24.39) and Krupp (24.49). Becdach (51.21) also took first in the 100 with Devorace (53.56) and Sierra Newton (53.99) right behind.
McNicol (2:05.82) and Morgan Sokol (2:09.85) earned first and third, respectfully, in the 200 backstroke while Ava Vial (2:21.52), Perlberg (2:25.09) and Madison Bond (2:25.68) took the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke.
In the 500 freestyle, Toepfer (5:14.47) came away victorious followed by Manderfield (5:16.51). Vial (2:08.55) took second in the 200 IM, and the Falcons wrapped up an eventful day with a 200-freestyle relay victory (1:36.61) represented by Becdach, McNichols, McNicol and Krupp.
For the divers, Natalia Mayorga won both the one-meter (278.35) and three-meter (273.55) competitions. Mayorga’s one-meter score was good enough to earn her an NCAA Zone Diving cut. All six divers who competed for BGSU placed in the top six in the one-meter, while the top four in the three-meter were all Falcons.
Three freshmen (Becdach, Devorace, and Solera) came out on top in individual events and earned their first career wins in their collegiate debuts.
“The women were competing with excitement and confidence today,” Barton said. “Both are necessary for optimal performance, and today’s results will help to propel us into the coming weeks.”
