Belmonte Leads 4 Member Spanish SC World Championships Roster

The Spanish Swimming Federation announced a four swimmer roster for the 2016 Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

That roster will include Mireia Belmonte, in a reprisal of the 2014 edition of the meet in Doha which saw the star fire off 4 championship records and one world record.

The four swimmers, including events:

  • Mireia Belmonte – 400 IM, 200 fly, 800 free, 400 free, 200 IM
  • Jessica Vall – 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast
  • Miguel Ortiz – 50 back, 100 back, 50 free, 50 fly
  • Joan Pons Ramon – 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 back

They will be accompanied by coaches Jose Antonio del Castillo, Fred Vergnoux, Montserrat Bellver (doctor), Raul Moreno (physiotherapist), and Andres Roig (biomechanist).

Belmonte scored golds across 4 of her 5 event repertoire in Doha, finishing 10th and out of the final in the 200m IM. She’ll be looking to improve upon that mark, fueled with confidence granted by the gold medal she earned in the 200 fly at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Ortiz, Vall and Ramon were all absent from the 2014 Spanish short course roster, but are looking to make their marks in Windsor. Ortiz recently gained significant international experience racing in Rio as part of his nation’s 4x100m freestyle relay, which finished 14th in a new national record. He has since been on the World Cup circuit tour, most recently earning silver in the 50m backstroke at the final stop in Tokyo.

The official roster document can be seen here.

I wonder if she can rebreak the 200 fly record since she swam great in rio. In the 400im hosszu has that under control.

Cool to see Mireia there.

We don’t know the US roster yet. How is it chosen? At US short course nationals the week before with the classical procedure of trials or is it just the “volunteers” among the national team?

Well, given that it was supposed to be announced a while ago…I’m wondering if it’s not going to happen the way it was supposed to.

Here’s the doc – http://www.usaswimming.org/_Rainbow/Documents/936f7dfb-8595-4146-9a28-a2a1bd89bcc4/2016%20FINA%20Short%20Course%20Worlds%20Select.pdf

Basically – National Team Director and Head Coach can pick whomever they want, so long as they have the qualifying times.

Belmonte actually set two WRs in Doha in 2014: the 200 fly as well as the 400 IM.
