LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine swim teams picked up their first wins in the Division I era by sweeping their first home meets of the season on Saturday.

The women’s team competed against Centre College and Butler University in a double dual.  The Knights topped Centre 191-71 and beat Butler 143-119.

On the men’s side, Bellarmine dominated Centre with a final score of 196-64.

The women’s team collected six first place finishes, starting with the 400 medley relay (4:01.04).  Maya Sorensen, Lexi Pierce, Rachel Walker, and Liz Stevenson earned the win.

Walker was fantastic for the women, winning three events.  She was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:56.93), 100 freestyle (52.55), and 100 butterfly (56.77).  Morgan Bender topped the finishers in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.39), and Lexi Pierce raced to first in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.04).

For the men, Bellarmine racked up 12 first place finishes out of the 14 events.  The Knights started with a victory in the 400 medley relay (3:30.49).  Adham HowaidyDaniel SimsJacob Dray, and JP Metzner combined for the win.

Individually, Matthew Sims was sensational again, taking first place in the 200 butterfly (1:50.46), 500 freestyle (4:51.86), and 200 IM (1:57.88).  Howaidy won twice, finishing first in the 100 (54.08) and 200 backstroke (1:57.68).  The other multi-event winner was D. Sims, racing to first in the 100 (59.66) and 200 breaststroke (2:10.61).

Brandon Thomas won the 1000 freestyle (9:59.91) while Greyson Williams took first in the 200 freestyle (1:46.34).  William O’Connor led the pack in the 50 freestyle (21.97), and Metzner was first to the wall in the 100 freestyle (47.68).  Dray also tallied one first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (50.66).

Next up, the men’s and women’s teams will compete in the Southern Illinois Invite Nov. 11 – 13 in Carbondale, Ill.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Butler swim team competed against Centre and host Bellarmine over the weekend at the Mary Meagher Aquatic Center. The Bulldogs posted a 181-81 win over Centre, but fell to Bellarmine 143-119.

“We saw some of our best racing, team energy and engagement during this meet,” Head Coach Maurice Stewart said. “The team has been training very hard this month and we are getting better at racing tired.”

Stewart’s “Swimmer of the Meet” went to freshman Sophia Guyer for her outstanding efforts in the 100 and 200 Back.

Alani Hightower-Bend won the 100 Back with a time of 57.65 and Guyer was just off a BIG EAST qualifying time in third place clocking in at 1:01.79. Rachel Geller was close behind in fifth (1:03.28) and Abby Hobrough posted a season-best time in the event at 1:05.85.

Guyer was the Top Dawg in the 200 Back, winning the event with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:14.11. Rachel Geller set a new season-best in the race with a fourth place finish (2:18.79), and Claire Mastrandrea would end the event in eighth (2:25.38).

Stewarts’ honorable mention selection for “Swimmer of the Meet” went to junior Allie Carmichael. She came up with her season-best split on the Medley Relay (100 Breast), and put in solid times for the 200 Free, 200 Breast and 200 IM!

Avery Piel and Issy Petersen joined Carmichael in the 200 Free event. Carmichael took second with a time of 2:02.23 and Piel was right behind her in third (2:02.39). Petersen rounded out the top five (2:06.78).

Carmichael also paced BU in the 200 Breast. She placed fourth with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:30.74. Alexa Vota and Mattea Dumdey were also in action. Vota placed sixth (2:36.97) and Dumdey took eighth (2:44.56).

BU was well represented in the 200 IM on Saturday. Alani Hightower-Bend took first place in the event with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:11.28. Carmichael’s solid swim put her in second place (2:15.02) and Piel would give BU the top three finishes with her time of 2:15.54.

Hightower-Bend placed her name in the BU record book during the 400 Medley Relay. Her personal-best time in the backstroke helped Butler finish second overall in the event with a time of 4:04.93. Hightower-Bend now ranks fifth on the all-time top-10 list with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 57.39. Carmichael had a solid swim for a 1:09.4 split and Piel posted her season-best in the fly (59.6). Rounding out the team was Abigail Roberts (58.58).

Butler put together a third place team in the 200 Free Relay. Emily Landwehr, Hobrough, Grace Crane and Abigail Roberts finished in third place with a time of 1:43.09. Landwehr had a season-best lead-off (25.98) and Hobrough followed with a 25.72 split. Crane was right on that pace with a 25.73 split and Roberts brought it home at 25.59.

Crane was also active for BU in the 1000 Free. She took first place in the event with a season-best time of 11:05.43. Other Bulldogs involved included Olivia Klafta (4th – 11:31) and Colleen Carey (6th – 11:52).

For the sprints, Butler had four Bulldogs compete well in the 50 Free. Hobrough placed third (26.07), Roberts landed in fifth (26.51), Lauren Kirchner took sixth (26.65), and Issy Petersen was right behind in seventh (26.69).

Hobrough, Petersen, Landwehr and Klafta all swam for BU in the 100 Free. The top time belonged to Landwehr (56.04) with Hobrough close behind (56.69). Petersen posted a new season-best time (58.46) with Klafta close behind (58:83).

Butler brought home a first-place finish in the 200 Fly. Piel won the event with a season-best time of 2:12.54. Jillian Dawson and Claire Mastrandrea finished back-to-back in fourth (2:25.26) and fifth (2:25.41).

In the 100 Fly, Hightower-Bend posted a personal-best BIG EAST qualifying time of 57.01. She finished second overall and now ranks fourth all-time at BU! Mastrandrea and Dawson were also in action taking sixth (1:02.86) and seventh (1:03.80).

BU set another BIG EAST qualifying time in the 100 Breast. Landwehr placed fourth at 1:09.41 and teammate Alexa Vota was in at fifth (1:13.85).

The day also included a first place finish from Crane in the 500 Free. She came up with a season-best time of 5:24.28. Klafta also had a solid back half of the race to finish third with a time of 5:36.08.

The Swim Dawgs will return to action this weekend with a meet at Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 6.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Centre swim teams took a step up in competition as they traveled to Bellarmine, with an additional meet for the women’s team against Butler. The Colonels came away with three losses, with the men’s team losing 196-64 to Bellarmine and the women’s team losing 191-71 to Bellarmine and 181-81 to Butler.

On the women’s side, one of the bright spots for the Colonels was the performance of rookie Callie West, who posted the only individual victory of the meet as she took first place in the 50 freestyle in 24.37.

West was also part of a victory relay for the Centre women, as she teamed up with senior Peyton Patel and sophomores Kelsey Jenks and Greer Manger to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.63.

On the men’s side, the best event of the day for the Colonels was the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of senior Zee Oddo, junior Henry Lang and freshmen Nikolai Garding and Zolon Knoll won with a time of 1:31.54.

Other standout performances were turned in by Kai Oddo, who finished second in the 100 backstroke in 55.29 and Bryan Killian, who took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.12.

The Centre swim teams will return on Nov. 6 with a home meet against Wittenberg.
