Australia Remains At Top, Ireland Climbs Medal Table Through Night 4 Of Swimming In Paris

2024 PARIS SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Australia remains at the top of the medal table with four gold medals and eight total through four nights of competition. They have a two-gold lead as the US and Italy only have two gold medals each.

Kaylee McKeown was the lone Australian to win gold tonight as she won the women’s 100 backstroke, defending her title from the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The US leads the way with total medals as they have a total of 15, picking up another four tonight, including two in the women’s 100 backstroke as Regan Smith won silver and Katharine Berkoff won bronze.

Great Britain picked up its first gold of the meet as the men defended their title in the 4×200 free relay to close the night.

Ireland climbed the medal table as Daniel Wiffen picked up the country’s 3rd Olympic medal in history and their first on the men’s side ever. Wiffen continued the momentum from last night as Mona McSharry won bronze in the women’s 100 breast.

No new countries joined the table tonight after only three finals tonight.

France owes us big time by building kiddie pool

We are robbed of the first 56 w100 backstroke (which would have put w100 back on the parity with m100breast).

GBR would have broken 4×200 WR in a decent pool.

FOUR DAYS WITHOUT world record?

Has it been happened before in Olympics?

Japan, China and South Korea are having a good overall OG, but in the swimming pool.

Compared to SwimSwam gold picks we have:

AUS: -1 (+1 for W100 back, -2 for M400 and 800 free)
USA: -1 (-1 for W100 back)
RSA: +1 (+1 for W100 back)
Italy: +2 (+1 each for M100 breast and back)
CHN: -2 (-1 each for M and W100 breast)

RSA should say breast, not back obviously

I think the title should say Australia atop the gold medal table, not the medal table

The medal table is sorted by golds first. A “gold medal table” would only list gold medals. This table lists all medals, so it is the “medal table”.

World Aquatics published an official medal table earlier that matches this one. It’s the official medal table.

Very confusing language. If the only thing that matters is gold when ranking the medal table, why even list the others? Why not have two separate lists?

Gold isn’t the only thing that matters. China, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea all have zero gold but they’re all ranked differently. The table is sorted by golds first. Always has been, always will be

There is nothing confusing with a medal table. Gold always takes preference. Any athlete would swap multiple silver and bronze for one gold.

Right, I’m not arguing against anything you said. I just think we should have two lists, one that ranks countries by golds and one by total medals. We’ve all seen NBC do this a million times. I’m not saying gold isn’t more important, there are multiple ways to judge a countries performance. It’s basically just semantics. I’m definitely not trying to downplay the Aussie performance or agree about the value of a gold vs a silver
