Aussie Olympians out and about for GO Swim Month 2013

Swimming Australia’s GO Swim month has kicked off in Queensland with four of the state’s swim clubs; Helensvale, Redlands, Dunlop Park and Woodford welcoming Olympians Brittany ElmslieEmily SeebohmKylie Palmer and Melissa Gorman onto their pool decks  to share their swimming secrets.

Throughout the month of October swim clubs across Australia will be encouraging the community to start swimming and educating them on the benefits of being involved in a swim club.

London Olympic gold medallist Elmslie was the first to dive into the GO Swim activities when she attended the Helensvale Go Swim Day on Friday, October 4.

The 19-year-old spent some time with the aspiring swimmers, giving tips, taking part in a signing session and assisting with club relays.

On Saturday 5 October, Seebohm and Palmer joined in the GO Swim celebrations, sharing their elite inside knowledge with a number of young swimming hopefuls.

Seebohm spent the day at Redlands Swim Club while Palmer attended Dunlop Park’s GO Swim day with the duo singing autographs and leading coaching clinics with the attendees.

On Monday October 7, Woodford Swim Club opened its doors to dual Olympian, Gorman to help out with novelty races, autograph signing, a coaching clinic and a barbecue dinner.

Dennye Baxter from the Woodford Swim Club said their GO Swim Day was a great success.

“We were truly humbled to have Mel Gorman at our clinic and our swimmers were in awe of her. She spoke of her journey and gave many encouraging words to the attendees about swimming and reaching your goals.

“We gained 15 new members to club and our squad program and also an additional five children to our stroke correction clinics as well,” Ms Baxter said.

After a successful start in the sunny state, the GO Swim Month activities will soon move south with the Jones Tempe Torpedoes Swimming Club in New South Wales hosting dual World Champion James Magnussen on Friday October 11.

Magnussen will be on deck to encourage club participation, teach new skills and talk to young swimmers about their journey towards Olympic and Paralympic success.
