The final of the women’s 200m IM is on the docket for this evening’s action on day 8 of the 2024 Olympic Games.
Last night we saw American Alex Walsh grab the top seed in a time of 2:07.45 just under a second ahead of Canadian powerhouse Summer McIntosh. Walsh’s teammate Kate Douglass snagged the 3rd seed in 2:08.59.
Further down the line, Australian Ella Ramsay earned the 8th and final slot with a semi swim of 2:10.16.
- Alex Walsh (United States) – 2:07.45
- Summer McIntosh (Canada) – 2:08.30
- Kate Douglass (United States) -2:08.59
- Abbie Wood (Great Britain) – 2:09.64
- Sydney Pickrem (Canada) – 2:09.65
- Yu Yiting (China) – 2:09.74
- Kaylee McKeown (Australia) – 2:09.97
- Ella Ramsey (Australia) – 2:10.16
However, 20-year-old Ramsay will reportedly not be swimming in tonight’s final.

Women’s 200IM Final
Ella Ramsay has withdrawn due to illness.— Nicole Jeffery (@nicolejeffery) August 3, 2024
Israeli Anastasia Gorbenko was the next swimmer, placing 9th and will presumably take over the spot from Ramsay.
Update: Gorbenko did not take the lane; the lane was empty with just 7 swimmers in this evening’s final,
Ramsay earned her spot on the Aussie Olympic roster in this 2IM, courtesy of the 2:09.32 she put up at June’s Trials. Kaylee McKeown was the fastest woman at that competition, logging 2:06.63 Commonwealth Record.
She has had a pretty busy schedule with 3 individual events and women’s medley relay heat swim. I guess this 200 IM final was her final race in her schedule. Perhaps she was too exhausted to race last night. Good job, Ella, for swimming your best during this Olympic Games.
I do agree that it would be great if Gorbenko trained to prepare for the final.
I wonder how often the reserve does warm up for the Olynpic final? This almost never happens so it would largely be a waste of time but shouldn’t they have to be ready unless they pass the spot to the second reserve to avoid empty lanes.
That’s kind of crazy. If Ramsey was there and warmed up, and only withdrew minutes before the race, there is no reason the alternate would have been thinking they needed to be ready. This isn’t a LSC champs or a college conference meet. When is the last time someone no showed for an Olympic final?
it’s total BS…there should be consequences for this. It’s an olympic final and one lane was empty because someone didnt feel well 3 min before….
It’s easy to say that without details. I agree that there shouldn’t be an empty lane for an Olympic final, but what were the circumstances? Did she literally become ill right before the final? Was she feeling bad but intended to tough it out before realizing she couldn’t? I would think you do everything you can to swim vs giving away the spot. Was it an injury she was trying to power through, or was it an illness where she might have pooped herself, in which case I’m glad she didn’t swim. I would need more info before passing judgement.
Kyle could have used that lane.
Did she find out she was sick like 2 minutes before the race?
Something like that
With her DNS and Walsh’s DQ half the field got a medal….
Gorbenko robbed
Disagree. Why except the role as alternate if you’re not going to make yourself available to swim in the rare event that an alternate is needed? If Gorbenko didn’t think it was worth it to do that then she could have given the alternate role to Ye Shiwen and maybe she’d have decided to be there and ready just in case.
I think we all know why
Bruh what? If you’re an alternate it’s your responsibility to be ready to swim. I don’t think anyone prevented her from putting a suit on
Antisemitism
😂 “OMG Gorbenko didn’t show up for the final. #Antisemitism”
What happens though with the alternates before a final? I could understand if the scratch was four hours before but if it was only minutes then there’s no time for anyone to be ready.
Gorbenko should have swum faster.
She didn’t.
No alternates?
