ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Augustana swimming & diving teams completed a weekend against NCAA Division I competition as the women’s team defeated St. Thomas for the second-straight year while the men’s team competed strong.

“We had a really tough night at South Dakota State in its home pool after a long week of training, and to come to St. Thomas and compete with them with the men’s score and have our women be victorious, it was a nice little cherry on top to finish off the week. Now we have two weeks before our next competition, so we get to really focus on training and getting better. Our energy this past week and weekend has been excellent. In the Fast Lane
- Peyton Bartsch earned his first collegiate victory by touching the wall first in the 50-free. He finished in a time of 21.49 seconds.
- It was a one-two AU finish in the women’s 100 backstroke as All-America honoree Bryn Greenwaldt touched the wall in 58.19 seconds. She placed just in front of Ella Ward-Zeller as she finished in a time of 1:00.13.
- Greenwaldt also found success in the 50-free, leading a podium sweep in a time of 24.55. Makoa Montgomery was second in the race in 24.74 seconds while Angelina Chan was third in 25.20.
- Mason Kauffeld earned the victory in the 100 breaststroke as he touched the wall in a time of 59.52.
- In the 100-free, Meesha Montgomery won the event in 53.31 seconds while Sofia Hein placed third in 54.79 seconds.
- Isaac Rokusek made it a clean sweep for AU in the 100 frees, as he touched the wall in 48.29 seconds.
- Nesrine Jelliti claimed AU’s final swim victory of the day as she won the 100-fly in 1:00.25.
Off the Boards
- David Binsfeld picked right up where he left off Friday night with the victory in the 1M with 237.15 points. He also placed runner-up in the 3M dive with 224 points.
- Avery Lommel won the 3M dive with 218.9 points.
- Clare Duplissis placed runner-up in the 1M dive with 215.65 points.
Up Next
The Augustana women will compete as part of a meet hosted by Sioux Falls Oct. 20-21 with MSU Moorhead and Northern State in attendance at the Midco Aquatic Center. The Viking men are back in action Oct. 27 against Omaha, a dual the Viking women are also part of.

WOMEN’S RECAP: ST. THOMAS (92) vs. AUGUSTANA (115)
After a resounding win to open 2023-24, the Tommies looked to continue their winning ways with a home win over Augustana on Saturday. Though St. Thomas was unable to come away with a victory, the team saw plenty of success in its home pool. As they did on Friday, the Tommies claimed first place in the 200 medley relay. The team of Fischer, Urkiel, Lily Linden (Rochester, Minn. / Century) and Forsberg dropped three seconds from Friday to Saturday, winning the race with a time of 1:47.43. Urkiel also continued to dominate in the breaststroke, winning the 100 race with a time of 1:05.29.
Hayes duplicated her Friday performance at home on Saturday, winning both the 200 and 500 freestyle races for the second consecutive meet. The first year won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.16 before claiming first in the 500 thanks to her time of 5:17.49.
St. Thomas also earned a win in the longest distance race of the afternoon, as Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) went the distance and won the 1000 freestyle. The junior won the race by 14 seconds, clocking a time of 11:04.38 to earn nine points towards the Tommies overall team score. Opdahl also added another win to her belt, claiming first in 1-meter diving with a score of 222.25.
TOP TOMMIES
- Grace Urkiel (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) won six events over the course of two days. The senior was a member of three first place relay teams and won three individual races in St. Thomas duals against Green Bay and Augustana. Urkiel won four events in Friday’s dual against the Phoenix. She won two events as a member of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams before sweeping the 100 and 200 breaststroke races. She then won the 100 breaststroke Saturday and was a member of the first place 200 medley relay team.
- First year Sarah Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Central) made a splash in her collegiate debut, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle races in both duals over the weekend.
- Fellow first year Hattie Opdahl (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) won three events on the boards, sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions against Green Bay on Friday. She additionally won the 1-meter competition on Saturday.

St. Thomas will return to action on Saturday, October 14 when it hosts South Dakota in its first Summit League dual of the 2023-24 season. The first event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. CT in St. Paul, Minnesota.
MEN’S RECAP: ST. THOMAS (128) vs. AUGUSTANA (79)
St. Thomas rebounded with a 128-79 win over Augustana on Saturday, winning seven events, including the 200 medley relay. The team of AJ Carollo (Long Grove, Ill. / Stevenson) Bannon, Jensen and Salido claimed the top spot in the relay with a time of 1:35.57, setting the tone for the remainder of the meet.
Foti swept the distance freestyle races for the second consecutive day, winning both the 1000 and 500 in dominant fashion. Foti dropped nearly three seconds from his Friday time in the 1000, winning the race with a time of 9:57.21. He then earned the top spot in the 500, swimming a near identical tie of 4:47.72 to win the event. Jensen found the same level of success, winning both the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly races. Jensen won the 100 back with a time of 51.16 before earning the top spot in the 100 fly with a time of 51.69.
Drew Testin (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead) joined his teammates atop the podium on Saturday, claiming first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.83. Linde also earned an individual win the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 226.10.
TOP TOMMIES
- Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / West) and Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) won a slew of events for St. Thomas over the weekend. Foti swept the distance freestyle races against both Green Bay and Augustana, breaking the 10 minute mark with his performance in the 1000 on Saturday.
- Jensen won five total races over the course of two days, winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke against Green Bay on Friday. The sophomore then led the 200 medley relay team to victory in Saturday’s home opener before winning both the 100 back and 100 butterfly races as an individual.
- Ben Linde (Andover, Minn. / Andover) was the top diver for the Tommies over the weekend, earning top-3 finishes in all four events Friday and Saturday. Linde closed his weekend with a first place finish on the 3-meter board thanks to his score of 226.10.
